OT: Anybody got time for another hobby?

Was wondering with all the time we spend training if anybody had any time for an additional hobby. I happen to try and make time to do a little bird watching, specifically Hawks and other Raptors. Other birders get mad at me when I call what they like to watch “bait”. So anybody else got a life outside tri and family?

When not training I participate in mans oldest hobby - bishop polishing.

Hey Mr. Tibbs, you forgot to mention your Bishop polishing hobby.

Bishop Polishing is not a hobby but a God given right,…or at least that’s how I rationalize it.

I’ve been getting very frustrated lately b/c I’ve been spreading myself way too thin over my various interests. Obviously I like tri and cycling. Home improvement has recently (past 4 months) become overwhelming on the weekends. I also began skydiving last year. Now there’s a hobby with awesome yet expensive gear. I’ve pretty much given up on skiing which used to be the love of my life and now I only golf when I’m on summer vacations with my family. Now that I think of it I also have a pile of guitars and gear collecting dust that I rarely play now and never seriously. Why is it that everything I like to do is so damn expensive? Life would be so much more interesting if I didn’t have to spend so much of it at work yet had the means to support my interests.

I used to love to read. The only time I seem to have now with work, school, training, quality spouse time, is when I go to bed. At that point any reading never lasts more than about 5 minutes as I am off to dreamland. I hardly remember anything I read anyway.

Nope - like many of us no extra time/energy/money. There is so much I could do to my house and yard but I have to get my rides and runs in over the weekend and have no extra time or energy. I’m a little consumed by cycling & tris. I spend a lot of time (probably too much) reading this web site, reading different tri & cycling mags, and watching OLN.

Is spending time with my dogs a hobby? We have two Jack Russells and they are awesome.

Or maybe I could get one of those DR chippers and count that as a hobby.

Scuba diving. We used to do about a hundred dives over the summer season. Now only do twenty or so. We’re not putting the boat in the water this year. It needs a new canvas top and a bit of work. Gonna store it in my brother’s barn for a year or two and then recondition it.

Tri definately cuts into our scuba time. We didn’t take a scuba trip south this year either, but intend on doing so next winter.

Ocean Kayak Fishing, great upper body workout, peaceful and serene. I just love So. Cal. year round fishery. I usually fish in the Malibu area up to Santa Barbara but have also gone down into Baja. Life is GOOD!!!

napping is my hobby, even that has taken a back seat since december from getting one house ready to sell, moving 3 times and a new territory. I had to get sick to take naps. I’m off to practice my right of polishing even though I should do laundry. better to presoak it I hear.

Hobby? What’s a hobby? I really like sleeping. I swear, I must do it four or five hours a night.

I read romance. I don’t know why. It’s basically the same plot – girl meets boy, fall in love, get married. I’ve read literally thousands of books and am somewhat of an expert (if I do say so myself). Sure, you guys can name every nut, bolt and part on your bikes, but can you name 12 romance sub-genres? I thought not.

jmorrissey probably can. The back seat of his Jetta is probably overflowing with romance novels.

Woodworking - mostly in the winter.

i used to own hunter/jumper horses (track rejects). when that go too expensive (read - dad stopped paying board) i started cycling. now i swim and run as well.

lazy sloth type hobby would be watching hockey. at this time of year it is quite a consuming hobby too (3 games on at the same time last night!!!)

i like to read too - anything that is good - but with all the swimming, cycling and running i do, i tend to nod off after a couple of pages.

Surfing! Screw masters swimming… surfing is the way to water speed for me.

woodworking?
sure you don’t mean working wood?

Home improvement and gardening. I need to build a screen canopy over the blueberry bushes soon to keep the birds out. We just moved out into the woods and have acres of flowers, bushes, shrubs and trees that we have no idea about.

As an added benefit, I have an outbuilding with dog kennels, therefore, just for cerveloguy I’m getting another German Shepard so I’ll have two dogs and two kids, maybe I can talk my wife into two wives as well?
