Osgood-Schlatter disease (in adults)

I was diagnosed with a severe case in one knee at 12 (common). I’m 29 and still have it (not common). I’m almost embarassed for not having sought therapy since being told about 15 years ago that I was basically screwed. My lesion is the size of a golf ball, and it hurts, but not what I would describe as badly. Nevertheless, I’m sure it impacts my performance. What (if any) experience do you have with this disease, and what do you advise (as a sufferer or doctor/therapist sensitive to athletes) do you recommend I do about it (if anything)?

I have had it in both knees since I was a kid. I remember that it hurt then. I have two pretty large bumps on my knees now (I’m 38), but they don’t hurt or anything, nor do I think they affect my performance in any way. I played basketball, football, etc. in high school and have always been very active, but the bumps haven’t affected anything that I’m aware of. I can’t walk around on my knees, but I try to avoid that anyway. If you think they are bothering you, have them cut out. I always thought I would rather have them than have someone cutting on my knees. My two cents …

Is having them shaved off really an option? I thought I read/heard once that leaves the tendon stretched out or something. The idea makes me kind of sick to my stomach.
