Oregon/Wineries/Portland

Flying into Portland on May 9 (and flying out on the 17th). Plan on going to Mt. Hood, Crater Lake and Mt. Shasta (CA) and a few points in between. It is the points in between I am trying to work out.

  1. I like Pinot. Any winery recommendations?
  2. What is the best record store in Portland?
  3. Good relaxed place for a beer/bar in Portland? Ditto for a fun place to eat, I pretty much like everything, but I guess I like fish/seafood the best. I am traveling alone, so I like to keep it low key.
  4. Anything of interest in Oregon that you would recommend.

Thanks for your ideas. I always seem to get good ones here.

Believe it or not, my wife and I honeymooned in Oregon. Loved it. Started by travelling down the coast for 6 days. Acadia, Newport, Yachats (which has the best restaurant in the state I think, Yachats River House http://www.yachatsriverhouse.com/) then headed over to Eugene for a day (and stocked up on Pre shirts for friends and family from the U of O bookstore). Had a great lunch and beer at Steelhead Brewery. Then headed to Bend for a few days, great town and both local breweries are good. Up to Timberline Lodge for a night. Drove through the Gorge area, hiked Multonmah Falls (if you can see that do it). Stopped in Hood River, and this was the place that we wished we had spent more time in. Full Sail Brewery is awesome.

Last night was in Portland. Hung out at Henry’s Tavern downtown. Cool restaurant/bar with about 70 beers on tap, and most of the local stuff. The local breweries are so spread out downtown that we were fine sitting at the bar at Henry’s and sampling them all from there. I recommend Amnesia (I had the Desolation) and Laurelwood.

Didn’t hit a single winery, somehow didn’t make it on the list.

I went to Willamette Valley a couple of years ago. Although just about every winery we went to had very good to excellent Pinot Noir, a few really stood out. Archery Summit and Beaux Freres were the best, but you will pay for their quality. A very good surprise for a small winery is Arborbrook. Several others that I enjoyed were Adelsheim Vineyards, Domain Serene, Lemelson, Sokol Blosser, and Willakenzie.

You can’t go wrong in Willamette Valley. It is very laid back and most of the wine tastings are very well priced compared to Napa or Sonoma.

Wineries was covered (Willamette Valley/Newberg/McMinnville area).

Record Stores is a challenge as the big one on 23rd closed last year. I’d look for places on the East Side of Portland.

I’d have a beer at Kell’s Irish Pub. Good music. Not quiet, but relaxing. Avoid the McMennamin’s Chain as it’s become stale. What type of food do you want? There are some great Thai places downtown, decent Sushi, Cajun, you name it. If I were looking for something inexpensive one night, I’d probably go to the Screen Door.

Timberline Lodge, Multnomah Falls, Running in Forest Park, The Rose Gardens… Heck, give some more details and I can fill your calendar…

Cheers,
Puskas

I am most definitely not a wine guy. But I was at a wine bar with the wife and mother-in-law on Saturday. The flight I had had a Pinot from a winery called Adelsheim in Oregon. First wine I actually liked to the extent where I’d buy a bottle. Not sure where the winery is in relation to Portland though…

Just saw this in the WSJ. 1 hr north of Portland, North Williamette Valley area (14 winerys participate in the northwilliamettvintners.org)
Cooper Mountain Vineyards, J. Albin Winery, Apolloni Vineyards, Montinore Estate, Patton Valley and Tualatin Estate Vineyards.
Post back and let us know how the trip went. My wife and I want to spend a few days in Portland.
enjoy
