Oregon Runners: Yakima 26.2 vs. Newport 26.2

I’m an Oregonian now, lived here for a few years, and I’m looking to do my first marathon this spring. I’ll only run in Saturday races, which limits me to the Yakima Marathon (3/31) and the Newport Marathon (6/2).

I leaning towards the latter, but wondered if anyone here had any insight into either of the races. I’d be willing to switch if one of them is a must do.

Thanks for any info.

Both are great low key marathons. Well organised too.

I’ve run Yakima twice and Newport 4 times. Yakima is more scenic but hillier. Newport is fairly flat except for a gradual climb at about mile 25.5.

The weather is usually conducive at both events for a fast run.

If you need any more info, you could check out the race reviews at http://www.marathonguide.com

If you want to go fast, go to Newport. If you want a scenic run, go to Yakima.

I did the Yakima Marathon when I lived in Portland, and I loved it. I didn’t do the Newport Marathon, so I can’t make a comparison for you. That said, I was very impressed with the organization of the Yakima Marathon. It was a fun environment, and the whole town hypes up for it. I certainly didn’t have any regrets.
