Orange County CA Triathletes

Any Orange County-ites interested in getting together on Wednesday and Friday mornings for Swim/Run Bricks? I usually get to the pool at 5:15 - 5:30am, swim till 6:00am, and get running by 6:15am. I usually swim 1500 - 2000 meters and then run 5-7 miles. My run pace is 8:30 - 9:00 min per mile.

I live in South OC and work in North OC so there are lots of location possibilities. I usually workout at 24 hour fitness sport in the Anaheim area but am flexible.

Andrew.

I work at the 91 and Tustin Ave in Anaheim and swim at the 24hr fitness 2 X’s a week at lunch. Sheesh, those are some early time’s your talking about. My work day starts at 700, so it would be pushin it for me. I’d have to think about that one. What weekend rides, runs do you do? - Ernie

Does your route to work take you near South Coast Plaza? I swim at the 24Hr at Metro Center (by the performing arts center; access from the Bristol offramp as you’re heading NOrth on the 405. 5:15 works for swimming.

Hey Ernie, I agree, those times are wicked early, but that’s all I could do. I have two young babies at home and that is the only time during the week I can workout. I am usually too busy at lunch working to workout and evenings I turn into super dad - which for those who have experienced is much more rewarding than triathlons. Weekends are a problem in scheduling for me because of kids. I try go get out of the house at the first signs of naps, so I never know when. Although I should get into a groove of getting my butt out of bed on Sat & Sun early like during the week.

I start my job in Anaheim around 7:30 am.

If you want to meet at like 5am so we could swim run and you could get to work by 7, I am up for that.

Think about it.

Andrew

I come from Dana Point to Anaheim, so I could make that work. Hows the running around that area? What pace do you run?

Andrew

OCTG,

I am in the same boat - two small babies and a third due in June - hence my similarly masochistic training schedule. I share your pain in finding workout partners who have the same limits.

Right now I’m especially handicapped because my wife is on bedrest until the end of May due to this pregnancy. As such I’ve been off the bike for over six months - arrrgh.

Anyway, I will be swimming at 5:15 tomorrow morning at the MetroCenter 24HR. Once I’m back on the bike we should keep in touch as I will definitely be riding very early on Saturday’s in order to get home early and I’m not too far from Dana Point (I live by UCI).

A few of you have mentioned open water swim areas in Orange County. I live in Laguna Niguel and I’m training for my first Tri in July(Pacific Sports). Do you have any suggestions on a beach location for a novice open water swimmer? I was concerned about currents and crowds. I have another month of pool work before I’m ready to attempt open water but I imagine the water temp in May would still warrant a full wetsuit right?

Thanks,

Erich

I think Salt Creek would probably be ok and I have seen people swimming the buoys at Aliso Creek. OCTC people swim at Corona Del Mar a lot but that is kind of out of the way for you. One of those group swims might be worth checking out if you are scared at all about open water swimming. I bet MV masters do organized open water swims in south OC; I know SCAQ and UCLA masters did when I was in LA. I still remember my first open water swim. I had been swimming competitvely for 15 years and surfing for 10. Even so, it made me feel very small and very alone.

It will still be kind of chilly in May and even if it was July, I would recommend wearing a wetsuit if it’s your first open water swim, as much for flotation and overall comfort as for warmth.
