Optimal number of Miles on Running Shoes Before a Marathon?

I’ve got about 85 miles on my Inspire’s – usually I like about 40 miles on a pair of shoes before a marathon but these still feel fairly lively.

One run of 10 miles or more to be sure that they fit fine with no oddities problems, etc.

If it is a model I have never worn before, than I prefer a run of at least 15 miles.

That’s it. There’s no other advantage to “break in” for me, really. “Breaking them in” means wearing down the cushioning.

I can’t speak for every brand but I have no problem pulling my Mizunos out of the box and running a marathon. I did just that 3 weeks ago. I don’t think it’s like the old days when you needed a breakin period to loosen them up. Todays shoes are ready to go.

I like to get a couple short runs and probably a 12 miler 2 weeks out then put them away until race day. Sometimes I’ve tried to get 26.2 on them, but there’s really no reason for that. As was said, I believe the quality of shoes are so good that getting the same model in the same model year should not require much of a test. I make sure I buy that pair early in the training cycle in case the shoe maker changes them from previous years.
