Opinions on buying a $$$$ bike from a 'Mom and Pop' LBS

I found my dream bike on a random trip to a LBS. Giant TCR TT T-Mobile. Awesome. The only problem is the extent of the fit service is a stand over test. The shop guys are nice and I don’t question their wrench skills, but they aren’t exactly familiar with FIST. When spending $5K on a bike I expect high service, but I called around and this bike is impossible to get (Giant: maybe August, maybe never). So do I pass or buy the bike and plan on getting fit at a trusted shop?

Buy it.
I still have yet to see one in person (and I’ve been to several giant dealership in the last few monthes.)

The cool factor on this thing is this thing is through the roof. Hot bike.

If you are into pink, I’d imagine it’s as close to a power trip as you can get on without breaking certain local laws.

I saw one at a shop in SF about a month ago and they do more than a standover fit. The black & pink special. Yup, that’s a rare bike. It may be gone.

As long a the frame size fits you go for it. Road bikes aren’t that hard to fit if you start off with the correct size frame.

Its the TT one.

Dont they only come in a few sizes, like their line of road bikes? So if you know what top tube lenght you need you can pretty much figure out, in very broad terms, what size is going to work and what length stem you need. Ditto seat height - what do you ride now?

Well, I am not normally one to advocate discounts, but just go to the shop and tell them: You cannot give me the fit service that should go with a 5k bike, so please give me $250 off so I can get properly fitted. They will be perfectly capable of servicing the technical aspects of the bike, just not the fit. So give them their profit margin minus what a good fit costs. They should be happy with that, as should you.

I wouldn’t normally suggest this, but rather I’d suggest to go to a shop that can fit you, but if this bike is nowhere else to be found, what can you do.

Gerard is up to something. I can’t figure out what it is, but it’s something. Somehow this is going to sell Cervelos.

So…what did you say was the name and phone number of that LBS???

The shop must also sell Cervelos. He want’s the P3 to be the star on the floor. Just like Porsche would go nuts if a dealer had a Ferrarri on the floor.

ummmm, just asking rhetorically here . . . .

if this bike is so shitfire hot and rare and ohmygodlookhowit’sshapedlikeanaero-plane etc etc for the all the carbon tt bike fans out there . . . why in the world would mom and pop knock two-fitty off the top just becuz some yayhoo . . . . . , i dunno - thinks they should ?

why wouldn’t they just smile, and say no, and sell it to the next guy or on ebay for the price they want?

If the bike’s so hot, how come they still have it? Either it isn’t that hot, or they have been unable to sell it because they don’t know how to fit people on it. I know I am simplifying here, but I think they will give him $250 off.

well right on then, gerard. “if it is so hot”, indeed.

anybody pay 5K or for that matter, 4775 for a bike with “giant” written down the side is, admittedly, past my understanding altogether.

Whoa…hang on there!!!

If you go by standover height on the Giant TT, your bike will be 2 sizes too big!!!

FIST goes out the roof with the Giantt TT, it’s a slacker TT bike, not a tri bike.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the TT has gotten poor reviews and (2) noteable pros have already gone back to riding their TCR (downsized) set-up for TT/Tri…

I know it looks like the shiznit, but do some more homework before dropping the cash. Heck, if you’re 5’9"ish to 5’11", I’m selling my small TCR Comp with Burrow 5 & 6 (for TT/tri) frameset…
