Opinion on Disc Wheels

I am in the market for a new disc wheel and I need opinions. I have had Zipps and the hub and run-out has not been that great and I am not heavy. Looking at a Shimano PRO and a Reynolds Element. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Cheers

It seems that the trend is towards discs with the aerodynamic bulge towards the rim like the Hed Jet disc and the Sub-9. You can also use a deep dish with wheel cover which is a similar shape. Hed has posted some low drag numbers for the Jet disc on their website.

What about a HED C2 ?

I’m not a huge fan of Zipp either, but I do ride the 900 disc and haven’t had any trouble with it. Out of your suggestions I’d probably go with the Reynolds, but in my opinion the best disc wheel on the market is the Corima Carbone+. (It is as light as Zipp, but stiffer, with better bearings, and featuring a beautiful 12K carbon weave. Oh, and because Corima is so little-known outside Europe, you can get one for as little as $700-800 if you get lucky.) I would trade my Zipp for it anytime. Unfortunately Corima doesn’t have any US distributors, so finding one is tricky. Maybe on eBay?

Sending an amen out to Milano on his disc choice…I run dual Corima quad spokes and weighing in at nearly 200 I have never once had any trouble with the wheels.

I believe that all the new Hed discs: Jet clincher/tubular, and Stinger have the wider C2 tire well, which they claim decreases rolling resistance.

New ones or older?

Zipp has constantly been improving their hubs since you bought yours.

hold up, you mean the hub and runout as in seperate issues right? I’m asking as a friend of mine bought a brand new wheel, and then complaiined like crazy and then returned it as he kept saying the hub was loose and therefor the rim wobbled.

The preload on the zipp disk hubs is very light, as in it feels loose, way to loose when it’s not loaded. you can rock the the rim a touch and feel lateral movement in the bearings. Place a rider on it though and everything is golden. The light preload and space in the bearings is there to keep bearing drag to a min. Zipp guys came on ST as well and commented on this a while back as well as a fix which involved sanding down a spacer in the disk, thus tightening the disk up and of course decreasing the bearing drag that all of those engineers worked so hard to decrease…

but if you want a new disk, I’m thinking the HED disks with the bulged fairings for a bit more compliant ride.
