Open Wounds - Lake Swim

Okay so yesterday I had a little bike crash, the bike is fine but I have quite a bit of road rash.

I have a race this weekend (4 days from now) not sure how well these wounds will heal. if they will be clotted up or still open.

The swim for the race is in one of those neighborhood retention ponds (not really a flowing body of water, kind of stagnate) should I be concerned with these open wounds of bacteria or anything like that.

Opinions, words of advice?

If the lake/pond is big enough, it should be able to handle the bacteria from your wound.

I think you have answered your own question.

Other option and it is a painful one… Use a TON of “New Skin” and you might want to use the spray.

I guess I’m more concerned with it my wounds would handle the bacteria or whatever is in that pond.

as many coats of that New Skin as possible; it’s a liquid, comes in a little vial bottle-also known as liquid bandage
.

I had something similar the day before a half iron a few years back - a gash in my forehead big enough that stitches were an option. After talking about it with the doctor, we decided to leave it open, put some antibiotic gel on the wound that day after it was cleaned, again before getting in the water on race day, and some more after the race was over. It worked out fine.

Yep, be concerned. I’ve raced a LOT in that kind of water in Texas and Louisiana. (Nasty stuff year-round, but even worse in the summer.) I’m a big fan of Neosporin

Use one of these when you get into t1 and you should be fine.

Watch out for the leeches getting out of the shallow end. They LOVE fresh wounds.
