Hey, I’ve been injured for over a year now with IT band probs and am only swimming currently. Anyway I can’t really push off the wall as it irritates my leg, so I’ve been having to do tumble turns at about the black T without touching the wall with my feet. So I have to pretty much start from a stand still for each 25m swum, losing all of my momentum.
How much time do others think you lose per 100m doing this? It honestly feels like something close to 3-4 seconds per 100m to me!
I think it depends on how good or bad your turns were in the first place. I remember when I had a broken foot and only could push off with one leg. In that situation, I’d say I lost about 2 seconds per hundred. Not pushing off the wall at all, I’d say 5-8 seconds per hundred… again, this would depend on your overall speed and how good your turns were. You will obviously be slower if you don’t get any distance off the wall, but I think the bigger issue is the lack of momentum on the first half of the lap and ultimately, you’ll be a lot more fatigued. This is actually a pretty good simulation of how you might feel after swimming open water for a certain distance.

You tell us!
What were your 100 times before your IT band problems when you did regular turns and what are they now? Ultimately it doesn’t really matter as you just need to compare your times from workout to workout to make sure you are improving.
Good luck with the IT problem, it seems like more and more people are having trouble with that.
i’m an ex swimmer so turns were ok, altho not outstanding. i was barely training at all in the pool before i got back into the water properly (ie more than 2 swims per week) end of december. can do 1.20 for 10x100m on 1.30 doing these open water tumble turns fairly comfortably. 1.12 sounds much better doing tumble turns tho! hah
5-8 seconds sounds pretty good. heh i’ll take that…means i did an ok time for 400m last night, considering i’ve only really just begun training properly again heh.
i guess having an injury and being able to focus on one sport can have its benefits.
Old school of thought was the loss of a 1/2 a body length per turn. That translates into a few seconds per 100. With the open turn you are describing it could easily be 3-4 seconds per 100, if not more.
What in the heck? I couldn’t hang with you for the 2nd one of those!
I say this not as an insult to you but as a compliment to him (and I hope you can read it that way) - your freestyle probably couldn’t keep up with his breaststroke. Fulla’s a really fast swimmer.

No offense taken at all! I’m still a beginner swimmer and I feel good about how far I’ve come. Fulla’s not the only breaststroker that can beat my freestyle!
But hey, at yesterday’s practice Michael Phelps didn’t beat me even once in a single interval.
Phelps joke went right over the blonde girls’ head. Spill…
Ha! It’s one way I play with my teammates and try to use their egos to encourage them to show up for practice.
When one of them doesn’t show, I publically announce to everyone that for that workout they didn’t beat me even one lap! (since they weren’t there it’s technically true).
i would think it would be 3-4 sec every turn since you loose all momentum each time. the good thing about it is you will be ready to deal with the crowds knocking your feet out from you during the swim! Good training I think. I think your making a big plus out of a bad situation. Never saw why so many people think doing flip turns will help them in a lake or ocean. How many walls are there to do a flipturn in a tri? You will benefit more from your swim training. I think its more realistic.
