Open Water Swimming in East Hampton, NY

Going out to visit the in-laws this weekend.

What are the best spots for open water swimming within an easy drive of East Hampton? I know that a lot of people swim at Long Beach in Sag Harbor. Is there a buoy line to follow there? Is there a particular spot there to park and/or find the best entry? Are there any fresh water spots, as opposed to salt water? Thanks in advance for the help.

I was in Sag Harbor a few weeks ago and the number of jellyfish was amazing. I was planning on getting a few swims in, but not after seeing that. They may be gone now, but I’d check before diving in.

Any non-jellyfish infested areas to suggest?

Very few fresh water swims in the area. Only one that I can think of is Fort Pond in Montauk, which is where the swim for Montauk’s 1/2 IM is. Montauk is about 15 miles from East Hampton.

My approach to OW swimming in the area is pretty simple. Go to the closest ocean beach. Swim one mile down, one mile back. You get to check out all the nice houses too. It’s usually pretty calm, especially beyond the break and in the morning. And no jellyfish.
