Online dating

doing a bit of research, and need your help. anybody out there done any online dating? there’s a new one out there just for athletes (athleticmeet.com), and i believe i’ll write about all this.

so email me slowman@slowtwitch.com, with some usable quotes. which of these services are you on? are you finding people who are compatible with you? other triathletes? runners? or do you prefer dating civilians?

and of course do you use the same screen name with match.com that you use for the slowtwitch forum

if you give me anything quotable, tell me what to call you in the article i write, that is, don’t let me refer to your screen name on kiss.com or jdate.com if you don’t want others to run to the computer and look you up and check you out.

If you find a decent service, make sure you sign Tom Demerely up. Sounds like just the ticket for him.

"anybody out there done any online dating? "

Not online but played the newspaper personals. Went thru a divorce in the early 90’s before the net was in full swing. I was forty years old and had been married for 15 yrs to suddenly find myself single again. Was totally lost. A friend of mine suggested placing an ad in the personals. I scoffed but he insisted. He told me the secret was to make it humerous and mention the fact that I had a golden retreiver (the ex got the house and furniture but I kept the dog!) Received 23 replies from my first ad. Narrowed it down to six women that I met and there was not a bad one in the bunch. They were all good looking upmarket gals so it made me realize that there are a lot of lonely people in this world and others that were in the same situation that I was. Dated one of them for several months but it was too soon after my divorce for me to get involved in a serious relationship. Decided to be genuinely single for awhile but a year later I answered a woman’s and and we became an item for almost three yrs.

We split up but the woman I am with now for the past six years , we met thru scuba diving and not thru the personals. So it’s not inconceivable that for every lonely bachelor/bachelorette trigeek out there that maybe the right person for you might be at the same race. Chances of actually meeting them at that race are really slim, so going online might work.

Maybe I was just lucky, but my experience is that playing the personals does/can actually work. However, I’ve heard the opposite from some others who have had bad experiences. IMO, realize that the other person may not be who/what they say they are and you should also be honest in the assessment of yourself. Use it only as a way to meet people and don’t fall in love with what you see on the computer screen.

I have no experience with online dating however. Fortunately I haven’t needed it.

Hope this helps.

I can just see the ad copy now: SWM, 35-39AG, Alu/Slack/700c ISO for 0-dark-thirty masters workouts and Saturday AM Bricks. Please include USAT ranking in your reply.

I volunteer to be the chaperon! You don’t want to go on a 1st date with Slowman without one.
