Obama currently on the tube from Louisianna, and standing beside him...is that Charlie Crist? Helpful, or the kiss of death?
Helpful for Crist? Hell no.
There was a clean-up crew sent to the beach in preparation for the press conference. Apparently the powers that be didn’t want an oil-saturated beach in the background.
I’m a Canadian and it’s none of my bi’ness, but I ain’t impressed by the lack of leadership during this ordeal.
Yeah, it appeared that neither the admin nor BP took much care in the first couple weeks, then the admin addressed it as a political problem while BP realized it was a serious PR problem, THEN several weeks in, both entities realized it is a possible definer/crusher of their respective place in the world. Now they’re in unison with the “just plug the damn hole” mantra. Funny, the peeps of Louisiana were 100% engaged from day one. It’s already become their worst nightmare.
I watched a press conference from Louisiana last week. Jindal appeared to be withholding his rage while explaining that neither BP or the Feds had done enough at that point. Immediately after he left the podium, a female senator from the area (I’ve forgotten her name) took the mike and calmly told the assembled press that everything was being taken care of and that all the various agencies were doing a great job. There were some other senators present (all or mostly Dems, but who cares at this point). They were too busy gettin’ on with their mutual back-patting exercises to realize what was going on in the Gulf behind them.
I feel for the folks in the Gulf states because their lives and livelihoods will be affected because of this, and politicians seem more intent on face time than they do with the region and what the people have been through since Katrina through to this disaster. Where’s Sean Penn?

That’s where you are wrong. Water and water supplies are everbody’s business.

I’d point out that if Obama hadn’t giving any “face time” to this thing, he’d be facing far, far more heat. GWB/Katrina as an example. What would you prefer Obama do? Get down on his knees and mop up oil, like the General at the end of Blackhawk Down? Maybe have slow motion ESPN replays of him signing the various paperwork needed to authorize cleanup actions?
The people actually charge of actual cleanup operations are Coast Guard Admirals Allen and Landry, and they seem like fairly squared-away individuals. Very little political BS in their interviews.
Show leadership.
Yeah. He should stand on an oil stained beach with a bullhorn and talk about the patriotism of the people doing the clean up. “We can hear you!”
Is it too early to make jokes?
**Show leadership. **
What does that mean?

It means, “I don’t like that guy.” One of the symptoms of the brain damage one gets when one decides to follow one political belief no matter what is that logical and reason go out the window. To a Republican the taking of their brain out of their heads and shoving it in their ass, Democrats have do the same thing, they think that the President is not human. To the Republican Zombies the only thing that Obama could do right is swim down to the leak and twist the pipes into an Elephant shape to stop the flow of oil. He then has to walk on water and pick up all the oil. Anything less then this and Obama caused the spill on purpose to kill children with abortions and keep white people down. Republican Zombies are stupid.
Now that I here some Republican crying but the exact same thing applies to Bush and New Orleans. The Democrat Zombies would only satisfied if Bush walked out into the Gulf and turned the Hurricane away using his super powers then flew into New Orleans using his super powers and hugged all the black people. Democratic Zombies are stupid.
just on the news, the trying to cover the tip of the pipe with mud to stop the discharge of oil IS NOT working and the next thing they are gonna try, tapping into the line at some other point along it is not expected to be finished until late August. brilliant
the news down here is showing an increase in advertisement for beach resorts and vacations mainly from Florida and the surrounding coasts, the main slogan being “The Coast Is Clear” but that’s not working either and the bottom has fallen out completely in the hotel and resort business’ here . people or rather restaurant owners and the seafood business’ are saying that the seafood is still good for the most part but the price has already gone up considerabely.
Alright. Cool. Yeah.
Notice that the “keep the government off my back” folks are now crying that the government didn’t do enough/isn’t doing enough/can’t do enough to stop the spill.

It cracks me up. Sad thing is that they see it but won’t admit it.

No one on the “keep the government off of my back” side of things thinks that the government has no job to do in the running/safelty/protection of the country. They simply think they overstep their bounds and go far beyond what is required. For instance I don’t think that government should be telling us what we can and cant eat yet they seem to keep passing such silly laws an dpassing it off as “we know bettter than you”
Of course I am also not screaming at the top of my lungs that this is 100% their fault although the bloated governemtn ( not just the current people in office) and its workers surely have some cross to bear in this whole thing.
For what its worth the screaming I think is coming from the lack of response, which no matter what the current administration has tried to convince everyone of with their talking points, was not on top of things from day one which is obvious by their own party members freaking out.
The spill seems so bad at this point, I don’t know how you could prepare for something so massive. This could drag on for months and you can’t protect thousands of miles of coastline. There probably isn’t enough machinery and equipment in the world to make a difference for an area that large. One hurricane could blow away all that containment in an instant anyways.
With so many wells in the gulf, I’m surprised this hasn’t
happened sooner. Drill, drill drill = spill, spill, spill. Simple
mathematics.

I think it was the federal govt that let the permits, ensured safety compliance, and approved failsafe methods, so it kind of makes sense that people look to them. It’s also the same feds that are preventing state, local govts, and individuals from dealing with the spill in the ways they see as most effective. So yeah, there is lots of screaming at the federal govt to do more. Think of it like the illegal immigration problem; the federal govt says we’ll take care of it, then not only fails to do so, but threatens to sue states that try to do the job that the feds refuse to do.
Edit to add that one of the loudest screamers for Obama to show up and take charge was James Carville…

This is the part I don’t get. Does everyone think the president wakes up every morning and checks on the National Oil Spill Plan and keeps on top of all the latest oil spill technology? Does everyone believe the presidents have been oil engineers starting with Washington? Seems like Americans think everything can be done in 3 days or before the next commercial break. The masses getting mad pisses me off because the masses aren’t bright.
The masses want accept the blame they deserve for this.

Nope. But then again, I also didn’t think it was too fair to be blaming Bush for Katrina, espcially when the plan called for the locals to own it for the first three days.
As for the current problem, turns out that there IS a national oil spill plan. As it happens, after Exxon Valdez, them gov’mint types really did develop a plan. Any guesses on whether the plan was implemented? There will be plenty of time to spot the many failures once the investigations begin.
The MMS head had just about as much oil and gas production experience as ol’ Brownie of FEMA fame had with emergency managment. Isn’t the spoils system great? It remains to be seen if the press gives the President as much shit about that as Bush got for the FEMA guy.
