Just finished reading “One Second After” by William Forstchen. Not as good as “Lucifer’s Hammer”, which IMO is the greatest post-disaster book ever, and a real shame it wasn’t a movie, but a pretty realistic scenario.
In it, the US and other parts of the world are hit by multiple EMP devices, shutting down anything using electricity or containing electronics which is just about everything we use. The book then details what the main characters go thru to survive, I won’t spoil any of it.
I think this scenario is much more likely than a comet strike like in Lucifer’s Hammer, at least in my lifetime. I’d like to think that U.S. inteligence would be able to see it coming and stop it, but I doubt that too. Interesting Forward by Newt Gingrich and an Afterword by a retired Navy Captain who did a lot of research on EMPs.
Anyway, I think I will stock up on canned goods and seeds…ammo I have plenty of. I’m also going to go do some reading at empcommission.org, a report that assesses the threat to the U.S. from an EMP device.
Critics of such pre-emptive attacks say their advocates ignore, among other things, that Iran is having trouble keeping its missile bases from blowing up and that North Korea cannot seem to get a big rocket off the ground without it tumbling out of control.
Save some of your holiday popcorn tins. Line with a bit of styrofoam or a couple layers of corrugated cardboard. Instant faraday cage. I am a bit of a nut, so I actually have my hurricane prep electronics sitting in one of these things in the hall closet. Just in case.
Galvanized garbage cans allegedly work as well, but I have never seen those tested.
You won’t have to worry about shooting people trying to take your food, because the government will come and take it “for the common good”. Better off hiding most of it and keeping a stash out in the open to pay the tax man when the National Guard shows up at your door.

Iran has plenty of functioning missiles but no nukes, N. Korea has nukes but no missiles. Both countries hate us and are led by lunatics.
Personally, I’m a bit more worried about being blown up or dying of radiation poisoning than having all electronics stop working.
I mean, just think of the Stimulus that it would create when we have to rebuild everything we own? Instant employment for everyone. Leave it to a Republican like Newt to ignore this potentially explosive job creation pathway. Shame on them.

I don’t think Newt’s ignoring it, given that he said he’d name John Bolton as sec of state, he may very well be planning on it!

Move over Broken Window Fallacy. It’s time for EMP Stimulus!
