I heard John Kerry say this on a sound bite this morning.
I’ve never seen one of these black folk on camera saying that a redneck with a GOP sticker on his SUV held him at bay - are black folks like vampires and don’t show up on film or something? Who are these folks? Do you know even one of them?
How can such unmitigated BS go unchallenged by the non-biased mainstream media?
The comment just shows how stupid democrats are. If I was told over and over and over again that my vote didn’t count, I’d say “Fuck it, since my vote won’t count, I won’t go out and vote…might as well stay at home and watch TV”
The proper message would be;
“We are going to make certain that everyones vote will be counted so we need everyone to get out to the polls and vote”
I’ve also heard that people have to register in order to receive the right to vote. This registration includes a longish list of questions asked. Some people who have become American citizen can hardly understand it, so that they wll never be able to register and get the right to vote, though they are Americans! Is this really true or just a made up story?
Here everybody just gets a card with information about where your name is registered to vote . All you have to do is take it with you on election day together with your ID card. No questions asked, no further registration.
Kerry has tossed that number out several times, and it has always been a lie. I think he got the number from Gore.
Here’s just a couple of salient quotes:
"Florida’s Attorney General testified that of the 2,600 complaints he received on the election, 2,300 were related to the confusing butterfly ballot, and only three complaints concerned alleged discrimination on the basis of race.
“The Commission found absolutely no evidence of systematic disenfranchisement of black voters. Furthermore, the investigation found no credible evidence that any Floridians were INTENTIONALLY denied the right to vote in the 2000 election.”
You do have to register, but the forms aren’t that difficult, stuff like what’s your name, what’s your address, what party if any do you want to be affiliated with. To become a citizen, these people have to pass some knowledge tests and be able to recite the oath of citizenship, etc…They should have sufficient knowledge of the English language to fill out a registration card.
“Classic Beck, I wouldn’t expect anything else from such a partisan source.”
John, try to stay on point. The opening post was about Kerry’s blatant lie claiming that 1,000,000 blacks were disenfranchised in FL. There were only **THREE **claims of racial discrimination and only 2600 complaints in total.
I registered to vote when I got my driver’s license. No questions. No tests. Nothing… I take that back. The only question I got was… “Do you want to register to vote as well as get your license?”
As I understand it, I don’t even have to take my voter registration card to the poll, although I will… in case they don’t have me on the registered voters list.
There was an interesting (and very long) piece in this month’s Vanity Fair about Florida 2000, what happened, lessons learned, etc. There were examples given of problems with polling places in areas that were pre-dominantly African American. For example, under-staffed polling places closed at 6:00 p.m on the dot while registered African American voters stood in line who had arrived (theoretically) in plenty of time to vote. Contrasted with well-staffed polling places in white neighborhoods being kept open late.
The felon list issue was covered as well…thousands were purged from voter rolls because they shared a similar name to a felon, and the list was not checked.
I highly doubt that a million African Americans couldn’t vote, though. Hopefully these issues have been fixed, or we will have lawyers from either side all over the state looking for a recount…
“I highly doubt that a million African Americans couldn’t vote”
Read the Glenn Beck article linked above. There were only THREE complaints filed about racial discrimination, and only 2600 total, 2300 of which concerned the butterfly ballots.
Some people who have become American citizen can hardly understand it, so that they wll never be able to register and get the right to vote, though they are Americans!
They can do the same thing they do when they go to the bank, doctor, etc … take an English-speaking friend/relative with you to register.
I find it very hard to iagine that someone working the voting registration desk is going to say “sorry, can’t read the form, can’t register to vote. Nah-Nah”. I would be willing to bet that there are voter registration cards printed in languages other than English
"Be careful to send it early, several thousand military absentees were excluded in FL in 2000.
"
Well, mine is for NC, but the ones that were not counted weren’t just in FL, they were nationwide, and most of the problems have to do with getting them from the Gulf or wherever, not so much with the states themselves
