One mile, 2,500 ft OR how to chew up yer quads

So you think just because you do bricks of 50 + 6 miles or climb 4,000 feet in 10 miles on your bike you are in shape?

Your quads probably are not.

Monday’s hike was not very tough: Less than 10 miles, 4,500 feet up a nearby peak … But one mile (the first and the last) climbs 2,500 feet (no switchbacks) straight up (lil lung buster). Later you gotta go back down. Even with treking poles I knew it would not be pretty.

That half hour descent chewed up my quads for the week … An excellent excuse to skip my track workout.

this reminds me of back packing in the west (I’m a flatlander). I thought I was in shape until I tried to climb 4500 feet over 6 miles. I thought I could do it in a little over an hour. uh huh

We have a series of peaks like that near Seattle. 1000 ft/mile for 3-4 miles. great ski training. Where in MT are? I’m headed to Bozeman at the end of the month to visit my folks.

easy, do xterra big bear next year. the bike, 2 loops=19.5 miles gaining 2800’. Okay okay so that’s not to scary but then comes the run:) a short 10k at around 5.5 miles but it’s basically 4.5 miles of trails climbing hills that had all the pros walking and they are god damn steep. Basically you climb the ski mountain almost to the top of the mt. bike course and to the top of the main ski run. Crest the top and it’s a 1000’ descent in a little over a mile on dirt trails. I swear we ran sub 4 for that last mile. I wore cross country spikes and thank god or I’m sure I would have eaten it. Blew by at least 8 runners on that downhill just letting it all hang out. Railing banked corners, jumping berms, and that was the run. But I’ve been paying these last two days, oh the quads…

My favorite hill climb run is Mt. Ashland: A 13-mile run that starts at 1,800 feet and summits at 7,500.

nickc: I live in Kalispell and climbed great Northern on Monday (about the biggest mountain outside the Park, just SW of the Park)

Tai: I have complete respect for those Xterra triathlons and most mountain bike/trail run tri’s in general.

Way harder than regular triathlons: Glad you had fun.
