Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this but…
Here’s the problem: there’s a new coffee maker in our office, it’s one of those one cup coffee making contraptions (keurig, teutonic right?) where you chose coffees like ‘mountain glow’, ‘belgian nights’ or ‘mayan offal’, really, where do they get these names? As you can guess I prefer the old school coffee maker (right now both are peacefully co-existing). The problem is I’m shooting my mouth off (in my best Lou Grant imitation) about “it’s not real coffee, it’s instant, next thing you know they’ll be hanging kinkaid prints and sprinkling potpourri around.” Since I’m in the AARP AG people assume I know what I’m talking about but the dirty secret is I don’t really know what the stuff is. What is it? is it really instant or the real thing? a little help please.
Thanks beforehand
It’s as real as any other drip style coffee maker. It’s just high tech. Try the Green Mtn Coffee K-cups for Keurig. Perfect cup every time. No more coffee that’s too stiff or too weak. I love it.
Jim,
it’s absolute shit, that’s what it is. it’s flavored brown water. pansy food. a poor excuse for the real deal. a lie in a cup. another way to say i’m ok, you’re ok too; let’s hug. it’s coffee for babies. a perfect example of how our society is going down the crapper.
what kind of place do you work in? a toddler’s camp?
where’s the shit that will curl chest hair? that’s what i’m talking about.
if it ain’t black and thick, forget about it.
kitty
(who’s on her 2nd giant mug chock full of espresso. giddeyup.)
Wanna know what we use in jail? I’m not kidding!
Keurig coffee is the real thing, not instant. There is some of the best cofee inside the K-Cups, which have filters and brew coffee that is under back pressure. Several levels higher than the typical American java like dunkin which is for most 60% milk anyway or drip acidity coffee, plus the best part, no mess!!
Also, you can buy an adapter, grind up some Peets, place it in the little filter, and run it the new Keurigs. Awesome, and hotter than most drip systems!!
I hate those things, generally, because the coffee pods never have really good coffee in them. But I solved that problem.
I have a Senseo in my office, and I make my own pods up at home, about a week’s worth at a time, and use whatever coffee I want in them. Works perfectly, cheaper than buying coffee here at work (and better tasting, too), and is quick. I don’t think they make as good a cup of coffee as a french press, for example, but its not bad and it is very convenient.
But I agree, the prepackaged stuff is usually horrible.
oh my god Kitty… you are wound up today girl!

Hey Lou,
Sounds like you need to dig out the old “percolator” and show them what REAL coffee was like in the good ol’ days!
Unadulterated, undiluted, pure poetry…refreshing, thanks
.
Ok let me see if I can summarize the take home lesson.
The one cup coffe makers are in fact real coffee.
one cup coffee makers are for sissies and girly men who can’t drink a real cup of joe.
But if you like you can make your own pods, which will produce real joe.
And the most important take home message is
Don’t fuck with kitty when she is high on caffine.
I agree with the comment about the pods having poorer quality and lacking freshness.
If you really want a good one cup coffee maker, use a french press. It’s much cheaper too.
Am i the only person who thinks French press isn’t real coffee?
Want proper coffee; get an espresso machine (a decent semi or manual, or stove top) and a decent conical burr grinder. and fresh beans.
Ric
lol. yes, i think you’ve wrapped it up perfectly.
I didn’t say french press was real coffee, only better than pods
Ms. Silvia takes care of me!
I love my Keurig. The extra bold k-cups are the best. You can’t beat the ease and convenience of my single serve coffee maker. If I had the money I’d also get a single serve espresso maker.
I second the Senseo machine. Could be your new deskside friend. I’ve used mine every day for 2+ years. I even take it on vacation (when driving)…to get a good cup in the morning without having to go to a coffee shop.
okay, i can let you off this time.
Not that i’ve ever had pods, so can’t really say…

Kitty- you rock!
My view of the coffee world pecking order is:
- Espresso-brewed (I’m talking a real semi-auto or manual espresso machine)
- French press with a good grinder and fresh beans
- Drip (gasp)
476,349) pods
I used to have an Expobar Brewtus that, paired with a Rancilio Rocky grinder and some fresh beans made the best coffee I or anyone I knew had ever tasted. The problem was that it was a royal pain in the arse to make two cups of coffee in the morning with this. It was a 20 minute job to make the coffee and then another 20 minutes to clean up. Press pot is also great coffee in my mind, just different. It needs a different grind and a different bean, and produces a different coffee. If it’s a good single cup you want (not great, but good) you can go with a superauto like the Saecos. It sgrinds fresh coffee beans, tamps, and brews under pressure like a “real” espresso machine, and makes a decent cup of coffee. Not quite as good, but in my pecking order above it’s a 1.7. The convenience factor is awesome though. I can wake up, walk downstairs, press a button, and have real espresso in less than a minute with no cleaning up. I still miss my Brewtus, but not enough to buy another one.
Community Coffe sells pods. It tastes 100x better than the other stuff. Still not quite as good as from a pot. You can order on line and they’ll ship it to you. Communtity is the coffee used in 99% of New Orleans restaurants.
No way! that’s like Sam Adams light beer. I suppose if the mothership stays I could try cc’s pods but it’s like I’m giving in to the dark side. Hey, you missed crawfishman this year. Some french guy on a borrowed bike won the whole thing, go figure.
