Once a Runner

OK, looking for some help here please. This book has been recommended to me by TONS of folks and it is truly a classic from what I’ve heard. It’s also out of print and $100 (at least) for paperback on Amazon and BN. Without breaking the bank, does anyone know of where I could get my hands on a copy? Has anyone else had luck finding it?

Thanks.

FYI, just finished “Swimming to Antarctica” by Lynne Cox — couldn’t put it down. Also loved “The Amateurs” by David Halberstam…Yes, I like the books that hit the soul of why we do sports…any other suggestions?

I buy a lot of my books on half.com. The cheapest price right now is $85 and ebay has one for $65. I think I bought mine for 8 bucks 5 years ago… guess its time to start selling…

Good luck with that. My copy will never leave my side. picked it up for a buck in a garage sale.

I’m not parting with mine either. I picked it up many years ago in a Phidippides store in Atlanta, when I was attending some kind of running seminar there. I was initially unaware that the author was standing right next to me, and he ended up autographing it!

yeah, its hard to find. I’m lucky enough to have a autographed copy that was given to me. Wouldn’t give it up…

You guys are killin’ me…if I wanted to find ways NOT to get a copy, I wouldn’t have posted. Looks like I need to either hit the garage sales, roam used book stores, steal a copy or somehow get creative. See, it IS a good book.

That’s amazing to me that Once A Runner is going for those prices now. A cheaper read: Staying with It by John Jerome. A non-fiction account of a 40+ year old who gets back into competitive swimming.

PM me your address and ill mail you mine, free of charge.

also, read ‘gold in the water’…its a great book, right up your alley.

check it out from a library then tell them you lost it. Its a cool book, but its not a great book. I know ill get crucified for saying that but seriously though, it aint worth 85 bucks…I would probably pay 20 bucks for it…And yes I do have the book.

you used to be able to get it at Fleet Feet Sports. Even though it was out of print they had some kind of deal where they could sell it. I’m not sure if they still do. Its an awesome book. Also check out “The Rider” - its in print and you can get it at Amazon. I consider it the cycling equivalent to Once a Runner.

Just finished reading it two weeks ago. I enjoyed it. Got mine at the local library.

Sad suggestion. If you’re willing to steal, copy the entire book so at least the book will still be in the library for others to read.

Gold in the Water is so cool, I have read that so many times and underlined so many sentences that struck me. Dara Torres is my favorite and the picture of her when she was younger, with the old foamy goggles, is so pretty.

I borrowed Once a Runner from a friend and it was good, but I didn’t think it was anything spectacular.

I’ve read both as well. One thing to note is the Gold in the Water is non-fiction, Once A Runner is fiction.

then dont do it…im not too sad about suggesting it.

Are you an actual teacher? If so, that is damned sad. Condoning theft.

Occupation: Teacher

If you can wait, I believe the movie based on that book will be released this summer some time. I would be willing to bet that the book comes back into print at or around the same time the movie is released.

Just read it…awesome…best part is reading something that reminds you of yourself…anytime I need motivation to get out the door I just read a little from the chapter “the woods”

Try Purple Runner too. You may have to lose a couple stones to get faster.
