On your feet all day

I have a question for doctors, pts, or anyone in a similar situation… i recently started in a new job – in retail – which requires me to be on my feet for 8 hours per shift. while my running milage has gone down, my lower back pain has increased and my previous piriformis symptoms have returned. my weekly milage has dropped from 45-55 per week to just over 20 due to lack of training time… the only culprit i can single out is being on my feet all day. anyone have suggestions for how to get through this… shoes, lifting, etc?

Dansko clogs

Really. I wear them every day, all day. No lower back pain, no foot pain. Not even in surgery where you stand all day in ONE spot!

I wear MBT’s. They are ugly but comfortable and help with lower back pain.

I’am on my feet all day too, have been for years. Besides the right shoes add compresion socks also. They really help, just go online or to CVS ,Walgreens try some. You dont need the $50.00 type for running you can get them for about $20.00 and will be fine for work.

Danskos, Birckenstocks, SAS shoes and compression socks might all make the situation better. Also up your stretching.

Compression socks are a must. Your legs will feel refreshed at the end of the day. I’ve tried the expensive ones and the ones from the drug store and the cheaper ones are just as good (but I do buy the men’s firmer trouser socks instead of the female version because they’re higher pressure).

My preference is Merrill’s on my feet.

Also, try to run before work, because I rarely feel like if after 12 hours on my feet…

I’ll echo what eddiep said about compression socks. I have been wearing TEDS to work for over 20 years.

Good idea about compression socks. Not meaning to hi-jack the thread, i’m a letter carrier and walking all day in all weather is catching up now that i’m in mid 40’s. Legs being tired at end of day is common, but have been able to get trainign in. What are these compression socks like? Can i wear them with shorts in summertime? or are they like the white surgical socks? Thanks steve

The ones I wear are like white surgical socks.

All of mine are black. They’re knee high and look just like the white ones you saw the pros wearing at Kona, but they’re black. If you wore them in the summer, they’d just look like black knee socks. Not exactly fashionable, but black wouldn’t look as dorky as white. My local CVS drug store sells them. THe female version is just like knee high panty hose. But the male version is thicker and more like trouser socks that men wear with their suits I prefer the men’s becuase they’re more durable and higher pressure (even though I’m a chick). You can also get them at medical supply stores (but more expensive).

I was a big Dansko person, but started getting sore arches. My feet are pretty flat.
Now it’s only Crocs for me. They ventilate enough for me and are slip-on slip-off. I find that being able to take my footwear off in those brief sit-down moments is good for the feet.
