On the move: and San Antonio?

anyone from there? looks like there might be some very good possibilities there…
training and racing scene?
town?
restaurants? cost of life?

Check out www.teamalamo.org They put on the Gonzo duathlon every year as well as other races. Seems to be a very active club.

Also rogersoler.com good running store and tri store they have a good online calendar.

Also google brittons bikes for web site they sponsor numerous tri’s as well.

Sorry you won’t be coming to Houston

fal7 in Houston

nothing is decided yet…still have to interview etc. but my guess is that I will have several offers.

Now there’s some confidence - guess it must be genetic…

it’s an educated guess based on the feedback I had after sending my resumes  not confidence.

Great town and unique character, recently surpassed Dallas as 9th (or 10th) largest city in US, but with a much smaller town feel. Location makes it a gateway to the “Hill Country” with innumerable places to ride both mountain and road bikes. Pretty active training and racing scene, and ditto on the Team Alamo and Roger Soler sites. Great selection of restaurants, with an obviously strong Mexican-American influence. An interesting article a couple of years ago compared San Antonio with Austin. Although only 45 minutes apart on Interstate 35, Austin was one of the fittest cities in the country whereas San Antonio was one of the least-fit cities in the country (although not as bad as Houston which was ranked almost at the bottom). So… if you’re not finding what you want in San Antonio, you’ll find it 45 minutes to the East in Austin.

Plus… don’t you live in El Paso?! Dude, it’s a no-brainer… make the move

Great town. Lived there a while back and at the time the cost of living was relatively cheap. Also, it is the hottest place I have ever lived! And I lived in Vegas for 4 years!

I grew up there and have to agree, it’s a great town!

Well, I am yet to hear someone say it’s not! only had great comments about San Antonio.
Apparently, you can swim long course if you want there, the town looks really nice with lots of restaurants (along the river thing…not sure how that part of downtown is called)…
and it seems it’s not as flat as I thought…I thought we were the only lucky ones in El Paso with real climbs, but apparently not.

Still on my list are
TX: Houston, San Antonion, Dallas area, Austin
Ca: santa Cruz, Davis, Merced, San luis Obispo
NC: Charlotte, Greensboro
SC: Rock Hill, Clemson (or maybe that’s the name of the university…forgot)
GA: Athens
FL: UCF (Orlando I think)
WA: Vancouver

Why are you moving again? Allergies?

i’ve never lived there but my wife grew up there and her family is still there so we go and visit 1 or 2 times a year. i’ve never been impressed, quite honestly. it seems like everyone is obese. it has the feel of mexico - also a lot of houses that look identical to each other. the riverwalk is nice but very toursisty.

again, this is just an outsiders view. i’m sure there are nice parts, blah blah blah.

allergies to dust…we don’t have much allergies to things like pollen and all that crap…never bothered us in France and we lived very close to cultivated areas.
even if that was the case, allergies to pollen, you have that for 3 weeks or so and it’s done…dust in El Paso flies 365 days a year.
Besides the dry air is really hard when you have asthma.
in more humid climates we are never sick, here, all the time sick…funny as it seems that for most it’s the opposite

I don’t mind obesity…it’s not contagious
.

If you move to the great town of San Antonio you will have access to a program where you can have an airman from Lackland Air Force Base who is in basic training come to your house for Thanksgiving dinner.

You would be nothing but an American hero if you let a couple of homesick, stressed out kids hang out at your house for a couple of hours and let them watch some TV and eat some food.

They will be so grateful they would proably clean you garage. That’s what me and my buddies did when I had the good fortune of having a great family take us in. The dad of this family of angels had broken his back a few weeks before and the garage needed cleaning. Over the loud and profane objections from the family we cleaned the garage to surgical room standards just too try to show how much what they did meant to us.

If not that than just visit the Alamo. I cry everytime.

Francois,

As a former Austin resident I can attest to the great training that is within reach. There are more than a few masters swim programs, and/or pools. My favorite “pool” was Barton Springs. 1/4 mile for each lap and no clorine. There are trails to run. There is also the Town lake loop with routes from 2.5 to 10.5. Many groups to run with and other triathletes in the area. Cycling was good as well. Hills west of town and flat east and south. Not as hot as someof theother places in Tx as well. If Austin had a bigger financial industry I would have stayed in town!!

Jw

I’ve never lived there, but I visit Austin fairly often.

Great town. Heads above the other TX cities on your list, IMHO.

Francois, I live right over the hill from Santa Cruz, and have 2 spare rooms. Let me know if you ever need a place to stay while you check it out.

Austin is cooler (I’m not talking temps). Austin is a bit more expensive to live…

San Antonio is cool too. Just not quite as cool.

if you pick Orlando (ucf) east of campus there are some good roads to ride but pancake flat. there is a group that rides from campus on wed nights. You can ask Marty Gaal about this ride since he frequents it. On campus there is a SCY pool. Clermont is ~45 minutes and $2.50 away on the east/west expressway. There are a few pools which have the ability for LCM although I do not know how much time they spend that way. I moved south to Naples for a Job and miss alot of what Orlando has to offer.

Hot hot hot hot hot
Lived there for 4 years, wouldn’t ever go back.

But I’m a bay area CA whuss, so take that for what it’s worth.
