Olympic goggles

What is the white string like thing hanging from the nose bridge on some of the swimmer’s goggles?

It’s the tie for the nosepiece. Swedish style goggles come unassembled and in various pieces. Part of the allure of swedes is that as you put them together, you can get the fit precisely like you want it.(digs for a picture)

To put them together, many people use the provided string, and a piece of rubber tubing that looks like a flat piece of macaroni. Others will cut off a piece of the headstrap to use as the nose piece instead.

It looks like most swim with goggles with no gasket. Is this at all comfortable to train in?

Give them a 1-2 week tryout period. You either hate swedes or find them the best comfiest goggle ever and never want to go back to padded goggles again.

I <3 my swedes. Never left rings around my eyes, and still comfortable when I was on the warm down end of a 10,000 meter day.

Was it me being tired last night or did some of the swimmers not have goggles on - like the girl who won the gold in the 100m breast?

What she didn’t tell you is that the swede goggles cost $2.50 each and are as high a quality as the $15 speedos.

I love them and won’t wear anything else.

They are very comfortable for some people, while other people hate them.

Either way I wouldn’t recommend them for open-water triathlons, because there is a good chance you’ll lose an eye/get cut if you get hit in the face.

“best comfiest goggle”

don’t you mean bestest comfiest?

did anyone catch the NYTimes magazine with Phelps on the cover? in there they had some new products, one of them being goggles that stick to your skin with a waterproof adhesive and have no strap or nosepiece…I wonder how well they work

Is there a preferred brand?

No preferred brand, all the ones I’ve ever tried are indistinguishable from each other.

I just order some from these people

I’ve used the TYRs, because they are a little softer. I raced in them all year and haven’t had a problem.

The TYR goggles are called Socket Rockets. I’ve trained & raced in them for two years & they are awesome. No leaks, no issues with them getting kicked off, and they are comfy.

I wore the Speedo sprint goggles in college, which was kind of humorous since I thought that the 200 of anything except butterfly was a sprint, but that’s another story. But, I’m nearly as blind as a bat and figured I would have to get something with a prescription in them so I could find T1 and find my bike in T1. Eventually, I found one company that graciously agreed to match my prescription exactly for the modest price of $275.00, plus shipping and handling. That would not do, but Speedo sells off the shelf prescription goggles for about $20. I forget the exact name, but you can find it on teh SpeedoUSA website. Although they do not correct for my significant astigmatism and the prescription itself is .5 off, they do a good enough job for me. They are also the only anti-fog goggles that I have had where that feature actually works.

You are correct…I noticed several girls (many from China) swimming with no goggles.

I’ve used them in many (all races) and never had any problems except getting them kicked off once. Any goggle would have got kicked off though. Best goggle I have ever worn…period. They have never ever ever leaked either.

.

I love my Swedes. Best damn goggle I’ve ever tried. They’re comfy, don’t leak, and tough.
