Just wondering if anybody knows any good websites or any advice on what a typical training week for an Oly distance tri is? Im just new to this, and come from a running background, so the cycling and swim training is somewhat foreign to me.
I’m a fit guy, back in the university days was a 15:30 5k’er and am used to 110-130k’s of running per week. However, I really want to get faster on bike and in the water… so just wondering what a typical week should look like.
Cheers!
it might be helpful to have more info. the more time you have to train the better. how much time do you want to spend (hrs/days/wk)? how weak are your swim/bike? do you know how fast you can swim say 400 m? bike a 40k? you’re a strong runner. if you don’t run much and just swim/bike the run may get worse. all these things would factor into the best plan for you.
just did my first Oly a couple of weeks ago.
Did the 40k bike in 1:06 and the swim was 24:30. I dont have a tri bike or disc wheel or space helmet.
Currently, run 4-5x/week, bike 3x, swim 2-3x. the run is never a problem… just want to get faster in other disciplines… obviously have to swim more, but how should you train for a 40k bike?
the more you train for a 40k bike the faster you will get.
like, 300 miles a week and you start tapping into your true biking potential.
that might be a bit much for a triathlete, but 200 wouldn’t be, if you have the time and energy.
A 15:30 5k is no easy feat, so if you are still in some of that shape, then tri’s might come easy to you. First thing you want to do is learn how to swim… With a masters team most likely. And bike more. Try to bike with road cyclists on hard/easy group rides. It will help your bike handling skills and fitness when you get some time hanging on.
Read the **Triathlete’s training bible… ** It helped me some.
assuming you don’t have any extra time for training, I think you’d do well to cut out 2 runs and replace w 1 more swim and 1 more bike. Your times are pretty good on both swim/bike, so I would guess what you really need is more volume on both. If you don’t do it already, maybe some interval work on the bike to improve your leg power. There may be stroke issues in swimming that could be corrected. A masters team is the way to go if you have access and can afford it.

Yikes…I was just going to move from IM down to Olys. I might as well stick with IM if this is true. Someone please tell my wife…
Swim heaps!! i.e. 5x a week minimum. Bike heaps and cut back on the running.
The biggest limiter to your performance are the first two legs (obviously) and the strength in those two legs is also the biggest limiter for your run.
You have some good potential there. In terms of biking, let intervals, over-gear work, tempo etc become good freinds.
With swimming, 100-400m intervals, tecnique work and LOTS of swimming so you can get a feel for the water.
That’s 15-20 hours a week on the bike… do you run and swim that much too?
If this is the Olympic TRI, I have no job or I never sleep plan then okay…
The amount of unrealistic advice given to the average triathlon on this forum grows exponentially.

Remember, though, the shorter the distance of the race, the harder you have to go.
So for an Oly, you’re going to be doing a lot of zone 4 training - you won’t be redlining it like you do at a sprint, but you’ll be putting forth a lot more effort than you do in an IM.
It’s still a lot of training if you want to hit the podium.
It’s just different training.
it won’t be 15-20 hours on the bike for long! haha
and I rarely hit 200 miles a week.
but when I do
I get better at biking.

Anthony, I totally agree. There are a lot of triheads who seem to have unlimited training time on their hands. Great for them but for normal mortals who work full time, balance kids, life, family, pets, etc., they should read The Time Crunched Triathlete, by Chris Carmichael. A pretty intelligent and thought provoking read, he makes sense for those of us who have real lives.
