Oldies Music- Age or Genre?

When I tune in to the local area oldies station, I have an expectation of what kinds of music that will be played. I expect to hear songs by the Beatles, Stones, Holleys, Ritchie Valens, the 4 Tops, etc. I want feeling good, bee-bopping music from the 50s-early 70s. The other day, I heard J. Geils Band “Centerfold” and Blondie “Call Me”. Personally, I would rather enjoy those songs if they were on the 80s station. On the Oldies station? Not so much.

So, what say you, LR Musical Geniuses? Is ‘oldies’ music a genre of music from a certain period or does a song become oldies-eligible after a certain number of years?

When I hear “oldies”, I picture 50’s and 60’s pop, R&B, Motown, etc. - Elvis, Buddy Holly, the Temptations, The Everly Brothers, Smokey Robinson, etc. (think the Big Chill soundtrack)

Classic Rock, to me, is the rock from the late 60’s up until, roughly, the floating date that is 25 years prior to today - that’s why J. Geils Band, Blondie, etc are now on every classic rock station (along with U2, even Guns and Roses). Of course you’ll always hear Zep, Floyd, the Who, Hendrix, etc.

Me too, but I’ve noticed oldies stations are now playing classic rock as oldies.

Time marches on, I suppose. They were playing The Cure in the grocery store the other day. WTF?

Hope it wasn’t “Killing an Arab” … oh, you said Grocery Store, not 7-Eleven; still …

I heard “Let My Love Open the Door” in ShopRite and, instinctively, I knew it was time to go
