Old folks win

So, we have a guy in our club in my age group 50-54 that is fast. At the local Carpinteria Oly Tri last weekend he was fifth overall. I was impressed. Then I noticed he was only second in the age group. The winner–THE OVERALL WINNER-- was 50. This is not a real small tri either -300 finishers. Dave Larson of Santa Barbara won in 2:11 on a fairly difficult bike course.
I age up next year, thank God.

It happens…

https://www.lin-mark.us/results_files/rwtri09.txt, but only 134 finishers.

Speaking of same: I know the local numbers, but what HIM times are considered Nat. class (55-60 yo), say top 10%?

Our masters are some of our best athletes here, and we’re a fairly competitive area. Check out Jan Guenther…

Jan’s stats from IMWI this year:

  • 1st amateur / 8th woman Overall

  • Her 10:28:19 is the 2nd fastest 50+ women’s IM time ever! (The WB–10:22:54–was set at Ironman Florida on a vastly less challenging route.)

  • Her time was 11:24 faster than the 2nd fastest amateur female at IMWI.

  • Her time lowered IMWI’s 50-54 course record by 1 hour, 17 minutes and 37 seconds.

  • Her time this year is the 4th fastest women’s time in IMWI history. Jan also owns the 2nd fastest time–10:24:42–set in 2002. (She now owns the 2 fastest masters times ever at IMWI.)

This is from memory, but I thinking high 4 hour, low 5 hour for 55-59. I better start looking for next year, not that I can compete at a national level, but Ithink I can get to where I am competetive again.

Inspirational! Thanks. I hope everyone reads about these tremendous athletes. I know we like to watch the top Pro’s, but these are the stories that really inspire. The gifted few that continue to race well after the glory days are gone.

I turn 55 in January and it can’t come soon enough. The 50-54 age group is getting tougher each year. Maybe when I’m 55 I’ll be able to win a few nice medals so I can close the gap on Finman.

Well, I guess I can still dream of ruling the 70-74 AG…

Wow, sub 5:15 and you don’t even get to play with the big boys…this is a great group.

You are lucky, I am only half way there. :o(
Next 2 years is not going to be pretty.

55-59 is still tough around here. I think Dean Harper is there along with some other fast guys I can’t think of, it’s early here. Our own docfuel is tough to beat when he’s healthy.

Yep, 55-59 will be no easier. Dean, Kim McDonald, Kevin, etc. They all still kick butt, usually beating the 50-54 guys.

Dave

I don’t age up for two years; when I do, in these parts there’w always…

Larry Krutka (M 60-64): 29:37, 2:36, 1:49, “4:59”

I don’t know if I can catch him, maybe the old fart will slow down at 65.

Kim McDonald is a local guy for me (: There are several fast guys around here. I think the OC tri club has a fast guy, I can’t think of this name. Anyway, they all show up for Cal 70.3.

Any thread about 50+ age group has to have this guy.

Here is the one I think I saw him using.

Get on your bike!

Here’s one guy I know at age 60 for HIM did:

37:39 2:23:25 1:47:03 Total Time: 4:50:39 AG Record

It doesn’t get any easier as you age up!!!

and to think he could perhaps get 6 or 7 minutes off of the swim…stud!

Don’t forget mirror man, now 55-59.
