Any idea what some of the fastest times are for the “Older” experienced racers out there or if there is a website/list that keeps track of all such records? I like seeing this as it helps reinforce the idea that you don’t have to grow old!!!
Here are a few times from the Carlsbad Half-Marathon this past weekend:
This guy lived on a fram around the corner from me. His name was Derek Turnbull and was pretty good at running:
[
The sheep farmer from Tussock Creek started masters running at the age of 40. Since 1975 the greatest veteran runner of all time claimed 25 world age group records.
His best year of running was 1992 when he set six 65-69 age group world records and two world best times as well as running a time of 2h 41m at the age of 65 in the London Marathon.
At world veteran track and field championships Turnbull won 28 gold medals. At the 1997 championships in Durban South Africa, at the age of 71 he won six individual gold medals.
Turnbull had no set training programmes, no stop watch or coach, he just got out and ran the hills for enjoyment.
His philosophy was: “find enjoyment in it and never give up”.]
The late, great Derek Turnbull ran a 4:56 mile at age 65.
Another guy getting close to 60 passed me the otherday in a marathon and he runs around 3hrs 10mins. A few years back he went to the USA and did 4 of the big marathons in 5 weeks and also went to some big rock concerts.
Just thought the above was a funny story!?
Can understand the rock concert thing as I have never been able to go to one either. The rock concerts don’t make it to this part of the world.
