Old bands, new music

Randomly this just happened and I’m geeking out over here.

Pulp hasn’t released an album before today since 2001. Threw out an one-off single in 2013. But Jarvis has released 6 albums since 2006.

The new Garbage album is great. I had a thing for Shirley Manson in the 90s. Still do.

That WTF interview was good. I usually get tired of Mark Maron about halfway through any given interview, but this one kept me tuned in.

I’ve managed to somehow miss Josh Homme. What album should I start with?

DECADES
Bad Religion marks 40 years of revolutionary punk rock with Decades — an eight-episode retrospective series filmed live at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California. Originally streamed during the pandemic, each episode spotlights a different decade of the band’s storied career: the ‘80s, ‘90s, 2000s, and 2010s.

Featuring powerful live performances, behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage, and candid interviews with all band members, Decades offers an intimate look at the evolution of Bad Religion’s music and message. From their earliest raw recordings to their most recent anthems, this series captures the sound, spirit, and substance of one of punk’s most influential bands.

As singer and co-songwriter Greg Graffin shared, “Decades allows new fans as well as those who were there at the beginning to get a rich overview of our entire career and witness the changes in songwriting and performance styles at each stage of our evolution.”

Watched Ep 1 (1980s) this afternoon

Funny story: when D’Kid was a librarian, a new girl came to work with her. I stopped by to drop something off (or pick something up, I don’t remember), and D’Kid introduced me to her new friend

For whatever reason, Ciara mis-heard my name

It was a while later, years in fact, after D’Kid had left the library, that Ciara asked “And how’s Greg?”
“Greg?” D’Kid asked “who’s Greg?”
“Your dad! His name’s Greg, right?”
“No” D’Kid, perplexed “his name is Randy”

Since then; I’m Greg - and I’m cool with that

In fact, I went so far as to create a playlist

My intro album was Songs for the Deaf, probably their top rated album. This was IIRC their only single released from the album.

Here’s a good sampling from their catalog.

He also put together a supergroup for one album and tour with Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones (Zep) and others.

My signed vinyl just got here today!

I’m going to add this one to the Josh Homme required listening list…

And here we have it

I finished up a new album recently called “Who Is The Sky?”. It’s produced by Kid Harpoon, joined by Ghost Train Orchestra and, on a couple of songs, my friends St. Vincent and Haley Williams. It comes out Sept. 5th under Matador—a new label for me.

I will start rehearsing soon for a tour that begins in September. The tour concept is unlike anything I’ve done before. We’ll keep the mobility that was a key element of the American Utopia tour and Broadway show— but instead of the chain… we will have locations. You’ll just have to come and experience what that involves.

Hope everyone is enjoying the first single (and video, directed by Gabriel Barcia-Columbo) “Everybody Laughs”, which is out now!

Kid Harpoon…

Tom Hull, aka Kid Harpoon, is one of the world’s biggest songwriters and producers, as acknowledged by his 2023 Songwriter of the Year Brit Award and two Grammy Awards. He co‑wrote and co‑produced Miley Cyrus’ megahit ‘Flowers’, and dominated the charts in 2022 thanks to his work with Florence + the Machine, Maggie Rodgers, Lizzo and, most famously, Harry Styles. Hull co‑wrote all but one song and co‑produced all songs on Harry’s House, including the ubiquitous single ‘As It Was’, which spent 10 weeks atop the UK charts and 15 weeks atop the US charts, and was Spotify’s most‑streamed song in 2022.

Just realized

Title could be read as

“Who Is This Guy?”

Really like the new Pulp album…especially Farmers’ Market and the little monologue in Grown Ups. Will be seeing them in Philly later this year.

Finally got around to listening to the latest Counting Crows album. I really like it. I’m not sure Duritz gets his due as a song writer. Spaceman in Tulsa is my new favorite song.

Early Springsteen vibes on that one.

My wife is going to hate that concert.
