Olano ran 2:39 marathon

Former World Champion road cycling Abraham Olano ran a 2:39:19 marathon(San Sebastian) last weekend. That is the fastest time for a former pro cyclist.

There is more than one page to this forum, maybe turn to page two or three now and again? lol

Oeps
.

I’m surprised this post has not gotten more attention. 2’39’ is pretty damn good for a pure cyclist.

Not a small cyclist either.

I would agree…a few comments on this verus the 20,000 responses about lance seems like not much interest.

I think this is far more interesting, for a few reasons:

  1. He’s been retired for a while. Most euros seem to just gain about 50 lbs. after retirement.

  2. He sure seemed like a pretty big guy, for a bike racer. Kabush LOOKS like he can run fast!

  3. The biggie…he doesn’t have the ridiculously high Vo2 max of the other top guys–his Vo2 was purported to be just about 70 m//kg/mi–and his pedalling efficiency was high. Of course, that begs the question:his running economy must be pretty good, since he doesn’t have the aerobic engine of some others–so are pedalling and running economy related at all?? I know a sample size of one means nothing, but I think it’s an interesting question…of course, it’s not as interesting as talking about lance…

Oh, and remembering lance’s comments about ‘beating Olano with one leg’, it was nice to see Olano demolish his time…

Wow! I am surprised his VO2 Max is that low given his credientials. Winning the World TT Championships - a highly aerobic event - with only a 70 VO2 Max. Just goes to show that VO2 Max is only one part of a large equation when it comes to performance.

I’d say the fact that most people on this forum probably don’t even know who Olano is and the fact that everyone knows who Armstrong is. I’d also say that most people here have been affected by cancer in some way. Last but not least Lance was a triathlete.

Great time for a big old pro… I have seen a few second tier pro cyclists do 2:30 times (2:28 for an NZ representative)…

who was that?

gavin stephens and I can’t recall the other one… If Nathan Dahlberg decides to do some run training, he will do a pretty tidy time. He has a stage win in tour de swiss and has run 36min 10km on cycling only and he father was a 27min 10km man… (from an aged memory…)

and how about you? I expect you’ve been down in that neighborhood (of times) yourself?

2:40 I think… memory is a little vague - it was not much fun!! Only ran it because I didn’t think I was fit enough for a quick half - very dumb idea!!!

If any pro or former pro cyclist took running seriously a sub 2:30 should be a very easy time to run.

I ran 2:37 3 years after quitting a 15 year smoking habit during which time the most strenuous activity I indulged in was trying to carry 4 pints back to my table in a single trip. For a former pro athlete in an endurance event 2:30 should not be hard. Lance ran 3 hours, but he was training with Matthew McConaughey…nuff said.

agree - without major biomechanical/injury issues…
