Zipp 999. I can’t wait. I’m not trying to start a tubular vs. clincher debate, nor a Zipp vs. Renn debate. I just have a few questions:
Do these wheels need rim strips? I assume not, for that wouldn’t make any sense with the glue.
Glue or tufo tape? If glue, which brand? If tape, regular or extreme?
Which valve extenders should I use? I notice that the tufo’s can be stacked, which is necessary with the 999 front (82 mm).
Tires: I’m thinking Tufo. Which model?
Main question: I have never ridden a disc before, so I am planning on riding it around on training rides several times to get used to the feel before racing on it (plus, it’ll be fun!). Should I put a pair of training tires on, ride them around for a couple of weeks, and then put a pair of race tires on? Or are the race tires going to be okay with the extra milage?
Can sealant be put in through a valve extender?
Thanks. I know that some of these points have been debated recently. I have read those threads, but they didn’t seem to answer these specific questions.

No rim strips.

Glue. Vittoria Mastik (my preference)

I like the ones that are just a hollow tube

For Tufo, I like the S3 Lite, 21 mm

Once you mount the tire you probably won’t feel like swapping it out. I’d say throw your race tire on, especially if you use a Tufo with sealant.
Can sealant be put in through a valve extender?
No. You put the sealant in prior to installing the valve extender.
Why sealant? Just extra mass at the far side of the rotation…weight x rotation = more gyroscopic weight (or what ever you call it)
I really like the Vittoria glue, I have tried and though it is easy - I am not comfortable with the hold I got from the Tufo tape…seemed to easy to me to roll the tire off the rim (I am probably just paranoid).
Put on your race tires. Tires all all good for a couple thousand miles…no need to change them out and do that whole PITA process.

But I thought the sealant needed to be put on when the tire is on the wheel? In that case, the extender will have to be on. Can the sealant be put on before mounting the wheel?
Indeed, the goop will add the the moment of intertia of the wheel. But my understanding is that 40 grams of sealant will enable you to ride without really any fear of a flat. That’s pretty strong testimony in my book, perhaps even enough to not carry a spare (although I don’t know that I would be able to go that far). Besides, the 999+sealant is still lighter than my 404 clincher. I’m not sold on the sealant idea for the race wheels yet, but I’m thinking about it.

I haven’t tried sealant for this reason. Other credible ST’ers have endorsed it’s use but haven’t addressed this point. ???
I used to make a mess of gluing. Having learned the tricks (posted many times here), it is now a clean and simple task. Lately I’ve been using Conti glue b/c it is more readily available. I’ve read that it is not wise to mix different types of glue, so I stick with the same brand.

I would agree, except if you plan to carry spares during your race and you don’t have any pre-glued, pre-stretched tires. Then, I would suggest that you mount a training tire first to be used later for spares in your race.
okay Rec…that post sounded about as bad as it comes…telling the man to go out and get a crack pipe is one thing (don’t we all need one of those after a bad day) but then telling him if he doesn’t he won’t get air up his ass…what were you thinking. The guy is now running back to clinchers.
Glue or tufo tape? If glue, which brand? If tape, regular or extreme?
I have used the tape with good success, but have not had to change out a tire yet. It is extremely easy to apply and not messy!
Which valve extenders should I use? I notice that the tufo’s can be stacked, which is necessary with the 999 front (82 mm).
Do NOT use the hollow ones. I had my valve accidently tighten underneath and it was impossible to add air as well as deflate. I eventually took vicegrips to it to loosen the extender and then used needle nose pliers to reach inside the rim to loosen and deflate.

S3, S33, S22 all good. Do not use 23mm or training tires. Only racing. Tires that can inflate above 120 or 130 psi are also nice so you at least have that option if you want it.

See above. If there is no x-wind you will not notice the disk except for the cool woosh woosh.
Can sealant be put in through a valve extender?
No. You have to put it in before tire is even mounted if your rim requires an extender of any kind.
I use the tape and had to pull a tire off last season (very bad crash, nice gash in sidewall). At was a PITA to get the tire off. Ended up throwing out the tire (it was not really salvagable anyways). If you do have to pull off a tire, you will probably want to do it at home and not in the middle of a race.
S3s are the cheaper tires. You spent money on a nice wheelset, don’t go cheap on ther tires that roll on the ground. I think (cannot remember) I use the Elite Road.
I use the Tufo Valve extenders. They are easy and you have to remove the core, so no leaving the valve open and having leaks.
Some may not get the Record 10 humor, but there is a little extender that goes on the pump to fit into a disk wheel. It looks remarkably like a crack pipe. I have had airport security ask what the heck it was, so now it goes in a check bag. I have only called it a crack pipe since what ? the mid 80s or so. People that use discs seem to all know what a “crack pipe adapter” is.
Getting air in the rear was in reference to the disc goes on the rear of the bike. I thought it was damn funny, but I am very sure some folks are giving that post a WTF ? But the truth is yes you need one of those guys too. I personally like the Conti Sprinter as a back up or training wheel tubie. Glue it on and keep it for a spare. Conti high end sewups are all pretty nice. Of the Tufos I like the S3 cause it is a bit bigger at 22 or 23mm than the Jets. The Lite series are pretty lite for my opinion, but plenty of guys swear by them. G
He should have said get at least one crack pipe. I have two. One goes in the little saddle bag on my bike and the other in my bike tools toolbox. You are really screwed if you lose your crack pipe, that much I know. Hell, you’ll probably wish you had some crack to smoke in it if you lose it.
You will never notice 40 grams. The affect of rotational weight is incredibly overstated. In fact, the difference between rotational weight and the weight being somewhere else on the bike is negligible (like, you’ll never notice). You can run models on analyticcycling.com.
If you are buying your Zipps new, they should be coming with a Zipp extender. Use that. With or without plumber’s tape, it’s better than all other extenders minus the Tni Extended valve core (which are pretty darn cool).
As for tape or glue…I’ve used glue since I was 13, then switched to tape…then switch back to glue…and now I’m running tape again. Never had a “problem” with either…but it’s well worth getting yourself versed in the pros/cons of each.
In a race, you need to either have a spare tire for each wheel or a valve extender and crack pipe handy. (The only negative to running this wheelset)
