As you read the bill over the next two days, say before Obama signs it, lets begin to list “surprises” and other items…
I will start with
When Obama was a state senator in 1996, he opposed welfare reform…this was one on Clintons greatest accomplishments (that bill was TRUE bi-partisanship in action). In the package there is roughly 250B in welfare spending…another $6,700 for every poor man woman and child in this country, along with the erosion of the 1996 reforms. It can be counted on to “stimulate” the loss of another generation to welfare dependency. If you read the bill closely, the states are given more to grow there numbers on welfare…for every new person on welfare, the fed govt will cover 80% of the cost.
Since Lyndon Johnson declared a “war on poverty” in 1965, this country has spent nearly $10 trillion on that cause. Yet, 44 years later, the poverty rate remains right where it was. By now we should have learned that throwing money at the problem doesn’t work.
Why is Obama and the left wanting to go back to pre-1996 welfare spending policy?

After pushing Congress for weeks to hurry up and pass the massive $787 billion stimulus bill, President Obama promptly took off for a three-day holiday getaway.
Obama arrived at his home in Chicago on Friday, and treated wife Michelle to a Valentine’s Day dinner downtown last night. The couple was spotted leaving upscale Table Fifty-Two, which specializes in Southern cuisine, with the first lady toting what appeared to be a doggie bag.
The president plans to spend the Presidents’ Day weekend in the Windy City, and is not expected to sign the bill until Tuesday, when he travels to Denver to discuss his economic plan.
Both the House and Senate passed the bill Friday night.
The push to get the bill through before the holiday weekend was so frantic, members of Congress didn’t have a chance to read all 1,071 pages of the document before they could vote.
“In a perfect world it would have been nice to have had more time to process it,” said Ilan Kayatsky, a spokesman for Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY).
Meanwhile, Gov. Paterson called yesterday for fiscal restraint with the massive influx of federal aid. His budget office estimated that New York will receive $24.6 billion over the next two years, $4 billion more than first believed. brendan.scott@nypost.com

Oh I get it, the rush was due to the three day weekend!

This looks like a cut and paste from another site. Why are you posting hearsay stuff? Did you actually read this in the bill or did you swallow this hook, line and sinker from a right wing site?
edit: Oh I see it is hearsay. You could have done better. Heritage actually says $22K and change for every poor person and states that 264 billion is welfare spending.
Doncha luv rhetoric. Facts pulled out of their a$$e$.
That’s my concern too - no one knows. We’re considering stocking food, and investing in gold/non-us stocks for now. I don’t see how we can avoid crazy amounts of inflation.
We can avoid crazy amounts of inflation by letting this hit rock bottom and rebuilding. The US government, business and consumers have shown they have no ability to manage money. Instead of bailing everyone out and printing money we should fail and rebuild.

Don’t go postal, it’s just an economic downturn. Everyone loses a bit, then business as usual. I’m actually not too worried. We’ll see.
It was odd to me to read that there were negotiations over which spending items were deemed recurrent. As a “stimulus” bill, my original expectation was that it was all a one time expense, but no, apparently some amount is with us for life.
"RONALD REAGAN started it, Bill Clinton finished it and last week Barack Obama was accused of engineering its destruction. One of the few undisputed triumphs of American government of the past 20 years – the sweeping welfare reform programme that sent millions of dole claimants back to work – has been plunged into jeopardy by billions of dollars in state handouts included in the president’s controversial economic stimulus package. "
“That’s the ticket. Let’s go back to the way we treated pre-1930s recessions and depressions. Folks were tougher back then.”
They where. What will stimulating get us? Will it change our habits? Will it fix the problem? This is a band aid pure and simple. It will cause inflation which will hinder the economy and get us no where. Fail now then rebuild. It is a system that has worked on many different levels for all time.
Both. This is the most important crisis in the history of the planet earth, possible the whole universe. The flood Noah delt with pales by comparison. Why couldn’t it be discussed for another week? Why couldn’t those actually voting on it get to read it? Wouldn’t it be nice if the American people actually knew what was in it?? I’ll answer my own questions. Because you are trying to sneak one over on the American people, you have to move fast fast fast. Second, the ruling elite had a three day weekend planned and they didn’t want to work.
