Official California Ironman 70.3 thread!

Is it too early to start this? Ah, what the heck! I’ll kick it off with the current weather outlook. So far, it’s looking like we’re going to get lucky and be bookended by cool, overcast weather Friday and possible rain Sunday night. Saturday is looking nice, but we’ll see how it develops. Let’s hope for the best. The forecast as of Monday night, March 30th:

Weak high
pressure aloft will keep the weather fair and seasonal through
Tuesday. A shortwave trough of low pressure will move through the
interior west on Wednesday and Thursday. This will enhance the
marine layer again…probably by virtue of a coastal eddy…and
increase the winds in the mountains and deserts. Another deeper
trough arrives Thursday night and Friday. This system even indicates
a little rain. If models continue to show this solution…rain will
make it back into the forecast soon in the form of a slight chance
on Friday. After that system moves through a ridge develops for two
days before yet another trough Monday and/or Tuesday. This trough
shows even a greater chance of rain…but that far out the
confidence is lower.

… arrives Thursday night and Friday. This system even indicates
a little rain…
California rain always arrives a day later than it was suppose to or sometimes it never arrives.

Bump for the Tuesday morning crowd. Any predictions on the winners?

Yea, I was checking the weather looks like sunny but SoCal cool. But Fri and Sun/Mon don’t look good at this point.

Looks like a great day today. I going to CDM for a swim then do a 4mi run…got love it:)

I am going with a Potts and Carfrae repeat.

I raced a TT in 34 degrees, high winds and snow Sunday. I think I can handle “bad” weather in San Diego

I’m pulling for one of the home team guys.

Go BJORN, SERGIO, JONAS, and JORDAN!

Did you swim:) Sorry…j/k.

I’m sure the weather will be nicer here.

Hope to meet you later in the week.

Have a good trip out here.

not me, just shooting for a finish, given it’s my first HIM. Goal is under 6 hours, and I will be happy. Certainly, some will be much faster than that, and some will be much slower, as well. Proud to be a MOP’er.

Since riding my Hed Jet 9s in last week’s 15-20 mph cross-winds I’ve been constantly checking the weather report. The Weather Channel currently has 22 mph winds for Friday. I really hope it doesn’t stick around for Saturday.

Hey Jay. I’m looking forward to racing!

Anyone have info on the current water temp in Oceanside?

OK - There are 40 guys listed in the MPRO division (listed below).

Outside of the usual 70.3 contenders (Potts, Thompson, Cunningham, Bjorn, etc.) there are a bunch of wicked fast ITU guys on the start list. I hope this is a preview of a ‘post-Olympic’ season where a lot of the ITU guys go long. With that said, there could be some surprises tomorrow in the pro race. Some other names to watch: Matty Reed (coming off a strong performance at Miami), Stephan Poulat, Will Clarke, Paul Amey, and Paul Tichelaar. Also, expect Limkemann and Adam Webber (in his first major pro race) to be up near the front after the swim.

Fred, just got back from surfing here in San Clemente. Water is about 58 here, and we’re only 20 minutes north. I did SuperFrog two days ago and the ocean temp in Coronado was probably 59 or 60.

59 or 60 sure beats the heck out of ice skating on lake michigan! I’m looking forward to anything above 50 at this point for the air OR sea! can’t wait to race!

STEPHANE POULAT and SYLVAIN SUDRIE are staying with me this week. Stephane should be right up there he said he has had a good training camp and is ready to go.

We will see Saturday

Are there any recommended roads near expo to ride on for nice 20-30min Fri afternoon ride?

San Luis Rey Bike Path is the easiest for an uninterrupted ride. Of course, riding up and down the coast can’t be beat for atmosphere if you’re from out of town.

Good luck.

Head north and ride the bike course north to Las Pulgas Road and back. All you need is a picture ID to ride onto the Base, but you have to stick to the northbound part of the bike course and then double back along that same route. The rest of the Base is off limits except on race day.

Fred, you won’t care…j/k. I swam for an hour at Corona del Mar today. Ocean temp was 55 but I was comfortable. I did have a neoprene cap.

See you later in the week.
