Off topic, but on topic -- electric razors

My Norelco bit the dust traveling back home on Sunday. So I’m looking for a new one. Yes, I use it on my legs too…

I got a Braun something or other, but the thing made my hand go numb just hanging onto it. And it sounded like… well, it was loud.

What I’m looking for:

  • Not making my hand go numb.
  • Fairly quiet would be nice too (I have two kids and a wife who are usually asleep when I’m shaving).
  • Rechargeable.
  • Can use it in the shower (my old Norelco wouldn’t do this).

Any suggestions?

I use hair clippers for my legs as opposed to an electric razor, fast and takes the hair down pretty tight.

I ended up getting a dry-only Remmington for my face and the Norelco Bodygroom for my legs. I LOVE the bodygroom–can be used wet or dry and is a pretty close shave. The only downside is that you have to let it run out before charging again (8 hours to charge)–if you recharge it constantly the battery will start to lose the charge quicker.

good luck.

Panasonic Wet/Dry.

Vortex or Pro-Curve?

Hey,
I’ve been using the Norelco cool skin for four years now and I love it. Use it on my legs too. You can use it in the shower and it has the gel dispensers which are nice when your face is feeling dry. I haven’t changed the blades yet and it still cuts close. I’m not sure about the other Norelcos but this one came with a small attachment trimmer for other body areas, like the back of the neck, or your sideburns, right!

Lots of good reviews

I have the 7735.

I got the Braun Syncro its $200 but worth it.

I think mine (I have two b/c I used to travel a lot for work) might have been replaced in the product line…I didn’t realize this until you asked, but I don’t see them online anywhere. I have had them for several years now. Guess I’m getting old.

I saw this one in the store (I think it was the 7735), and the only feature I saw that gave me pause was the plastic gears under the heads, driven by a single shaft from the motor. Any issues with that assembly? Didn’t look like as positive an engagement as the old one I had, but I could be worrying about nothing.

And also, is it “required” to use the lotion with the razor? The review said something about each shave requiring him to hit the button some 6 times per shave…

The plastic gears have not been an issue. I would say they are solid and well designed. About once a month I’m in there to clean and for preventative maintenance and there isn’t any play, loosening, or breaking down. The gels are 5 dollars for 5 and you don’t have to use them. There is a housing where the gel goes and there is pump button (sort of like the old reebok pump shoes) that is yellow and you sometimes might have to press it five times to prime it and get a little goo out on the top which is about a que-tip sized dallop (the technical term). The replacement gel packs make great stocking stuffers (thanks Mom) and I’ve only used one from the pack I got last X-mas/hanaka/festivus. What I do is buy the full sized nivea after shave lotion (3-4 bucks) and throw that on the old face. The packs are available in the same stuff and there is a gel available in addition to the lotion.

If you are familiar with electric razors, especially with one you can take in the shower, here is my take. It works well in the shower but the closest shave is when I shave dry. If I can’t handle the irritation then I use a little of the gel.

Maybe get one from a place with a good return policy so if you aren’t happy you can take it back, but I think you’ll like it.
