Off Season Run Training: Drag a tire

If you are looking for a way to improve your running here’s an idea:

Last winter I did this training for a 100 mile ultra and have started it up again this winter. I took an old tire, tied a bungee cord to it and tied that to an old climbing harness I had (less the leg loops). I do one or two runs a week of about an hour or so dragging this tire. The workout is great and I find it helps my leg strength alot.

Just don’t use a new tire…it really messes up the tire after a while…

Clincher or tubular…?

we should call you “the pit bull”!
more power to you, that is a tough exercise!

Schermy…are you doing the run on a treadmill :-)…or outdoors in snow…also were the 2x per week runs the Ray Zahab approved 6 hour variety?

I’d be more impressed if you harnessed yourself to a Ford F-350 dualie with turbo-diesel. Gas pedal matted…and in reverse.

Don’t give him any silly ideas…the guy ran a 3:08 at Ironman Wisconsin…Schermy is the real deal and that tire training works…now if we can just teach him to swim!

It’s outdoors, and you bet it is Ray Zahab approved :)…And I am working on the swim…it will be there by next summer…now I just need you to help me with my XC form so I can hammer at forestville
.

Schermy, where are you working on your lame swim? Just come with me and I’ll make you swim with the band with no pull buoy for 60 minutes and that will straighten you out (literally). For XC skiing, we’re on. Any weekend plus a few mornings per week and you’ll be ready to rip the 100K on March 3rd!. We’ll just drop you off in Tadoussac 100K away from Forestville on Friday before the race and you can run 100K for a warmup, and then the next day you can XC ski the 100K race…that should get ya going!

…and in case you 18-24’s are wondering whose ass you’ll need to kick next fall in Kona, once Schermy get’s his swim down to 56 minutes (and also takes 30 min off his bike split), he’ll be a force on the lavafields next fall:

Ironman Wisconsin 2006

I am swimming with technosport…I’ll get that swim time way down…

…where do you ski in the AM…are the gats the only place or is there skate skiing near Kanata somewhere? Either way I am in…just curious how far I will be driving

Looking my splits that you just posted kind of hurst…how the hell did I swim 1:16…that is just pathetic…haha…

Yeah, 1:16 swim is pretty bad for a guy with the engine for a 3:08 run…

We’ll be skiiing in the Gatineau Park for skating and in Kanata for classic. You can drive back from Gatineau Park to your work at Nortel in 20 min. Finish skiing at 8:30, change in the parking lot (handcloth portable shower), in the car by 8:40, at your desk at 9 am.

Skis start at 6:30 am, hopefully in 10 days or so.

Dev

some people laugh at the idea…but I used to live on top of a large hill (Mount Soledad for you San Diego kids). I had just moved in and one day there was a rather old gentleman (55/60?) pulling a tire up the hill and it was just roped to his stomach. I thought to myself “ha, idiot. doubt he’ll do that again”. I saw the same guy doing it at least once a week. I have since moved but I’m SURE at least some of the SD-ST people must have seen this guy. hell…crazy fitness people flock to this board, he might even be reading this. (sorry if you’re 40 dude, you look older)

Schermy,

Where do you do your tire-dragging workouts? I’m guessing it’s not around the canal on Sunday mornings…

no one has asked for pics yet?!

Interesting idea. Once I can run again I think I might try it just to see…

Your workout sounds intense. The same methods have been used by football players to increase their acceleration and driving force. They use a specially designed sled for the same purpose:

I haven’t heard of anyone using this method for endurance training. I’m glad that it is working for you.

Yeah, we want pics!

I think the sound of a tire dragging and bouncing behind me would drive me nuts. To say nothing of dealing with snags!

if you lay it flat on the ground it doesn’t seem like it would bounce that much
.

Keep in mind that Schermy was training last year to run 100miles across the Arctic pulling a sled. This dude is hardcore…no wussy cookie cutter triathlon stuff in his program…once you survive the Ray Zahab program, I suppose running sub 3:10 off the bike is no big deal…or course the key is to survive!

I’ll go back to my lame 3x45 min run per week “off season” run program!

yeah we use to run with tires for hockey but never for an hour. That is some hardcore action!!!

I don’t think Ray Zahab prescribes any runs shorter than 2 hours!

I use a bungy cord to tie it to my waist, so there really isnt any snags or bounce at all. The sound isnt all that bad either, I just turn up my music

As well dev, my run training isn’t all that insane right now…well not compared to KonaExpress’ 90km a week…I am no where near that right now…

With that said, for most of the summer I was running alot…I would run a 3:10 marathon every sunday for much of the summer…running that ultra last winter really helped alot I think…although it killed my swimming
