Off Season Ideas

I’m looking for some ideas here… I’ll try to be brief.

I was back on the bike this spring summer after an 18 month break from cycling (new daughter, moved house + other family reasons).

The time I needed/wanted was not available so I didn’t get back to my best this year; I would guess that I was about 2-3km/h from my best HIM speed.

A mid July HIM will be my main goal next summer. With that in mind, how should I approach the bike over the winter?

Just long easy stuff or should I do one intense set per week too? I respond very well to intense training but is it a viable approach to take in the off season?

From November to April most of my cycling will be on the trainer because of snow/ice.

Ideas and experience would be appreciated.

I’ve tried both approaches long/slow and short/hard…yes were still talking about cycling.

Both methods work at improving cycling fitness but for a time crunched athlete (house/family/kids), I’m all for putting in a lot of hard work in a short amount of time.

Don’t worry, it’ll feel like you’re going to die, but you won’t.
