Curious if any locals in the area have a current read on the water temp in Oceanside Harbor? Better or worse than last year?
Looking forward to kicking off the season, good luck to everyone racing!

swam at La Jolla cove on Monday. Not too cold with a full suit and regular swim cap. Took about 5 minutes to warm up and feel comfortable. I would guess the water was in the low 60’s or high 50’s.
what was the temp last year? similar? coming from Az, anything under 75 is freezing! good luck all…
Thanks Greg.
Monty I think it was around 60 last year if I am not mistaken, just a bit under 75 so you might be a little chilly
Wasnt that bad after a couple of hundred yards… at least thats what I thought. Good luck!
I’ve been swimming La Jolla cove the past few weeks including this morning and I think the lifeguard sign said 58. Like the other guys said it takes 2-5 min to feel warm.
I would plan on on 58-63.
This year I bought a DeSoto hood and I definitely recommend it! Last year I just double-capped it but the hood is really the way to go! Get some practice in with it before the race…
Station in Oceanside is not transmitting, but the one in La Jolla says 62F.
I surf nearly every day about 20 minutes north of O’side. The water was about 56 on Monday after the howling NW wind we had, but light winds and warm temps this week should moderate that a bit.
I’d expect 58 degree water temps for race day.

Nothing like a nice brisk morning swim to start the day off right!

Ha, ha. Yeah! Well, today we had south wind, which will help moderate the water temp a little. Tomorrow/Saturday we’re supposed to have warm Santa Ana’s, so that will help some more. No strong cutoff lows in the long-term forecast for right now. Those are what can cause the strong NW wind that brings the cold water, so I’d say water temps should be similar to last year (just under 60 degrees) based on what I see today in the forecast.
57 last night at La Jolla Cove…a little chilly but still 5 minutes and your warmed up.
I went for a swim down in La Jolla yesterday, and it really wasn’t bad. It was freezing getting in, but after a couple minutes of swimming I had warmed up considerably, and my hands and feet didn’t even go numb. So if you’re wearing a fullsuit for the race, and you make sure to get in a good warm up beforehand, you should be fine. It’s just that initial adaptation period that sucks, hence the warmup.
Swam this morning at Crystal Cove (Newport Beach). Numbing cold for the first 5 minutes then was fine. Wore a squid lid and booties. I would estimate the temp at 57 degrees and would expect it to be a bit warmer in the harbor for the Oceanside race.

Says it is 17.2C, or 62.96F. I did a swim in Havasu, AZ, and the water was 62*F. I’m usually pretty chilly in my endeavors, but a regular wetsuit and swim cap made me perfectly comfortable.
Last year, water was about 59*F, so lots of people swam in squid lids.
http://www.surfline.com/...ern-california_4238/ water temp today 55-57
I swam at Corona del Mar today water temp was 54.
Moonlight Beach in Encinitas was 58 last Friday but felt a bit more comfortable than that. La Jolla Cove yesterday was colder from that NW tribodyboarder mentioned. Look for it to warm a bit back to 58 along the north san diego coast and 59-60 in the harbor. Double cap or neoprene hood would help but not needed at Oceanside. I’ll be wearing a hood but am NOT good in cold water. I’m more worried about the winds we’ve been having every weekend for the past few weeks. That last 10 miles on the bike could be sloooooow.
