Oceanside 70.3 pre-race swim practice

Does anyone know where I can get in a practice swim the thursday or friday before the race? Preferably in the open water. I will be staying close to the start and will have a car.

Close to the start? If you don’t have any problem swimming out and in through the surf, just swim right out front of the Expo by the Pier. That’s what I did last year. Other than that, I’m sure someone else will direct you to some local open water swims.

In past years, we’ve gone to La Jolla cove to swim there, and usually there are a ton of folks swimming. It’s not the actual swim course, but at least it is cold Pacific salt water with swells.

Go on base and swim in the boat basin…

thanks for the repsonse. Where exactly is that? I have never been to the area before.

Just a bit north of o-side. you will actually swim past the channel into the boat basin during the 70.3 race. Its actually called Del Mar Boat Basin. Go thru main gate, first light turn left, go to the water, you will see it. Weekends are good for swimming there, no boat traffic at all. During the week its not busy at all either. If you try to swim the 70.3 course on a weekend, you will have to deal with the boats and fishermen…

Do you know any militry peeps?

George
We can drive on to the base?

No…thats why I asked if they knew any military peeps. I might be able to assist in that department depending on the amount of people and time of day they want to swim!

I was all set to pack up my board and head down there for a surf…j/k.

Like TBB said you can just swim near the EXPO.

I would recommend La Jolla Cove. The other option which is closer is moonlight beach in Encinitas, closer then La Jolla but no lifeguards this time of year and no dedicated swim area (the cove has a buoyed area no boats or cayaks are allowed in). Nytro used to put together a friday morning swim at moonlight, give them a call and see if they still do it.

Why pack up the board and surf at Camp Delmar when you can just head to churches on North Camp P??? Thats my favorite spot!

Empty line up.

Yea, Cottons, Trestles, Churches, Blacks are the best breaks in SoCal.

PS: I’m going for my first open water swim of the year today.
