I’m excited to be doing Oceanside again! I can still remember standing in my Speedos…freezing waiting for the start…hopping on my Eddy Merckx and of course the beautiful run….it was sometime in the mid 80’s. I’m blessed to be healthy enough to return.
Anyone else out there doing this race?
I will be going if it comes off. Not really excited to get in the water, but I never am.
What was the race like in the 1980s? Was it a similar course? I only remember back to the first IM California in 2000 when the transition area, swim, and finish were also on base.
I’m not doing the race and I hope the oil spill doesn’t affect the swim! It’s pretty far from Oceanside; however, it’s still a possibility the beach could be closed.

I heard on NPR this morning that the oil will slowly be making it’s way south via wind and current. Hopefully O-side doesn’t see oil after 25 days, but it is possible. Swimming in oil is not a liability Ironman or the city wants to get involved in.
Ummm… how many years did they have the swim completely in the harbor and who was concerned about oil then???
Today tar balls have been reported as far south as Del Mar.

so for locals or people in the know, would you recommend to roll the dice and sign up for the race or play it safe and avoid it?
this is pretty much the last opportunity for me to race this year, but if the swim is cancelled its not worth the travel and cost.
thanks

I think the big appeal (at least to me) about O’side is the first of the season 70.3 and excitement that comes along with the race. I doubt that will be the case in October, I deferred my entry to the April 2022 race.

No need to roll the dice, the race is sold out
for extra $125 I can still register with foundation slot, so still an option
with all the race cancellations/deferrals, it is pretty much the only reasonable option to race this year. but not worth the money/effort (for me) for a duathlon

I’m registered and have been wondering same . . . FWIW, someone asked about it on the facebook group for the race and no one seems concerned, including locals. Not something I’d put a lot of face in, but my impression is that the oil spill in particular isn’t super likely to cancel the event.
it’s hard to know what it will be like by the end of the month. That being said it if was in the next two weeks I’d bet it would be cancelled. Pretty much all the beaches are right now, al least in OC. Everything is moving south, so the location is not ideal in a few weeks.
alternative “race” a week before nearby:

the swim for this one has been canceled past 2 years due to extreme rough surf
.
The athlete guide was just posted . . . does anyone know what the deal with this comment in the race morning procedures section is about?
“Transition closes at 6:30 AM. All athletes must be out of transition and headed to the swim before this time regardless of an ocean or harbor start. If harbor start, athletes will line themselves according to their predicted swim time around the OUTSIDE of the transition area, entering into the swim chute at the north end giving right-ofway at the crossover where the swimmers that have finished the swim are entering back into the transition area.”
Will they switch to a harbor start if the water is too choppy?
yes. they switched course a few years ago and have raced twice since then. first year they moved to harbor due to larger swell and the next they kept the original ocean start. so based on two years, it has a 50/50 shot. when they switched to harbor only, the waves were not really that bad, 2 feet max when sets rolled in.
I’ve only done this event as a harbor swim
.
I’ve done both Harbor and Beach start. The beach start did have some pretty big waves, but once you past the break, it was pretty smooth sailing and the current actually pulled into the harbor.
Not racing this year, but will be back 4/2/22

Wow…I can’t remember what I had for breakfast yesterday. Not sure how reliable my memory is, but I remember it being an ocean start. I believe there were a couple ‘waves†at the start…the pros going first. It was really crowded…maybe 500 competitors 😀. It must have been in the summer months cuz I don’t remember wearing a wetsuit…just Speedos. The swim was non eventful and my Celeste green Bianchi with Campi gears and toe clips awaited for it’s ride on Basilone Road. Aero bars weren’t even in the vocabulary (unless you knew about the Nestle chocolate bar from England). The run??…I don’t remember at all. Must have been too excited…it was my second tri ever.
Anybody that remembers differently feel free to correct me 😀.
anyone know what the roads are like? I’m doing Tribike Transport, and I’m not sure they’re going to have my stuff back in time for IMAZ, so am sending all my ‘B’ equipment . . . wheels currently have Vittoria Corsa Speed installed. I’m not taking the race too seriously, but would like to not have six flats on the bike.
The MSN article mentioned above doesn’t sound good.
