Ocean swimming in Puerto Vallarta?

Will I be shark bait or not? Staying at an all inclusive resort sorta deal and not sure if it has any lap pools.

Not shark bait. The biggest thing in Banderas Bay is the stingrays. They’re the size of full-size SUVs.

The question isn’t whether you can, it’s whether you will want to. I was there about 3 years ago and the area I was staying wasn’t really OW swimming material. Rough entry to the water, choppy waves and most important, there is a river that empties into the ocean in PV (can’t remember the name) that splits the area in half. North of the river is the high end resorts and probably your all inclusive. South of the river is the city itself. Whether you want to be in the water at all will depend on your proximity to that river, which way the winds are blowing and the currents. Your mileage may vary but ask the locals before you go.

Having been a Lifeguard in Hawaii the last 20 years, I would say you would be asking for trouble. I can guarantee if there is a river mouth there are sharks nearby, possible Mako’s and they can be nasty.

Like my partner on Maui use to tell the tourists when you enter the ocean you enter the food chain. I bet there is a pool that is at least 20 yards across you could use early in the mourning.

Aloha
Have good trip

Went there in Dec. '07-about 5min into the swim felt electric like stings all over, thought I was swimming through a school of those small jellyfish so kept on for another five minutes. It did not subside so went for a pool on the resort grounds. Lots of turns, but better than getting stung. Don,t know if that is a seasonal thing. Happened once before to me in Hawaii in August.

Huh, when I mentioned the river I wasn’t even referring to the food chain (which is a good point). What I meant - but failed to state clearly - is that this particular river is especially gross. It flows from central Mexican agricultural areas and some dirt-poor communities. It probably isn’t water you really want to be swimming in or even near.

I was just down there in nuevo vallarta in March and found swimming in the ocean to be fine. I just went out past the shore break in the morning and it was calm and nice. I would swim parrallel to the beach for a about a mile, then walk or swim back. The biggest worry I had was all of the water craft. There are alot of people tourists running jet skis later in the day and they could really wreck your swim considering how blind they were… They didn’t really get out there until after about 9:00am though, so the morning swims were great. almost always glassy water too.

What I meant is that near river mouths, especially dirty ones with alot of debris attract sharks. There are dead animals and all sorts of things coming down it.

Here in Hawaii, there are alot of river mouths and Tiger sharks are always nearby mostly when it is rainy.

My brother had a longtime friend almost eaten alive while surfing.
