Fed tax on ciggies just went up bunches…
Didn’t he promise that the “middle” class would see no tax increases of any kind.
Can’t wait to see the effect Cap & trade will have on the poor…

Did anybody, even his supporters, really believe that?
Of course, it could be argued (as your thread title indicates) that most of this burden will fall on the poor, not on the middle class, so that technically Obama has lived up to that particular campaign promise. ;
Did anybody, even his supporters, really believe that?
Actually Rob, I believe many of his “supporters” believed that. I also believe many of his “supporters” (and the general electorate as well) have no clue…
I’m sure you are crying for them like the rest of us. Its strange of all the things to gripe about that is the one people are going towards.
Where are the conservative politicians who support no taxes on cancer sticks when you need them?

Yep, same old same old.
Yep, same old same old.
Does it even matter to you that the most conservative governor in the nation favors a cigarette tax increase?
You guys really need to get a grip.
Our republican governor raised cig taxes a couple years back to pay for health care for poor people…
“Does it even matter to you that the most conservative governor in the nation favors a cigarette tax increase?”
It merely confirms my view that conservatism is philosophically bankrupt.
Well shit, maybe the poor people can save even more money by… not smoking?
I think linking a tax on cigarettes to “taxing the poor” is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Maybe you should change your thread title to “Obama Raises Taxes on the Stupid”.

Why do you think the great majority of the poor, are poor?

I might almost agree with this, except for the complicity of the tobacco companies in creating more powerful, more addicting brands of tobacco. I wouldn’t mind if tobacco products were outlawed.
True, tobacco companies do make their stuff highly addicting. But they don’t force anyone to START smoking and get addicted! You’re still stupid to even start.
Even in extremely poor districts with terrible public schools, they still teach the detriments of tobacco use in elementary school.
Is it ok to take advantage of the stupid?
Maybe it is genius, killing off the stupid. But big tobacco needs to make it faster acting, so they die before reproducing.

Ha, I have no problem taking advantage of the stupid. Isn’t that why we have taxes on the lottery??? ![]()
I guess this presents the biggest dilemna… do we drop the cigarette tax to encourage the stupid to kill themselves quicker?
My big problem with this whole is why not make tobacco illegal? The games the Republicans and Democrats play are mind blowing in their stupidity. If it is sooo bad that you have to tax higher then other products take it off the market.

Stick around, the hysteria’s only just begun.
Mr. Tibbs,
Why do you hate freedom?

Outlawing tobacco = MILLIONS (if not billions) of tax income lost.
That’s why they don’t outlaw it! But honestly, that’s fine. I sleep very well at night knowing that I get taxed less because the government is taxing tobacco companies and idiots that smoke.
Don’t get me wrong; my initial post is NOT a protest of this tax increase… I think it’s great!! I was just protesting that someone linked this tax to a tax on the poor. Rich or poor, you’re a dumbass if you smoke, and you deserve to get taxed.

Yes lets. It has worked so well with other drugs.
