I can’t be the only one bothered by this.
Why did you leave out part of his sentence?
“It does not matter that gov’t is too big OR TOO SMALL but only that it works.”
Did you happen to listen to the next words out of his mouth? Something about continuing programs that work and what was that he said . . . oh right, stopping those that don’t.
WEAK.
you misquoted… yes, that bothers me…
“The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.”
I just threw up in my mouth a little.
I can’t be the only one bothered by this.
Jawa does a translation:
http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/195932.php Caught My Eye/Ear
From Mr. Obama’s Inaugural Speech: Original Obamanease: And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it. TRANSLATION: We’re sorry we have created wealth for ourselves, and we will now proceed to lower our standard of living and stop producing and consuming so much. We consume too much of X, and we’re having some kind of nebulous, nameless effect on the world/planet/climate due to our consumption of X (where X=energy/oil/natural resources/food/consumer goods/everything and anything).
We’ll just be what you all want us to be, because being all free and prosperous is just, like, too hard and stuff Original Obamanease: What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government. TRANSLATION: I know I only several months ago told you to “get in their faces” and argue about politics at every and any opportunity, but now I’m asking you to pretend that doing that is really reprehensible. Once you win an election, my children, you become free of all of these trivialities. The real question here is not, “shouldn’t we encourage a little more personal responsibility among ourselves and institutions;” the question is rather, “is the government sufficiently grafted into every portion of your life yet, and if not, where are we coming up short?” Worthless government programs and entitlements will be continued and expanded, so worry not. We will only release and promote statistics, outcomes and results as they are convenient for us to use politically, and all other assessments of our governance shall be buried.
Ahhh, I can feel the hope and change already ![]()

That was some funny shit. Thanks for cheering me up!
“Original Obamanease” LOL!
Remember just as in design Less is More and so should it be with the Federal Government.

could someone please dig up that post from Big Kahuna about how Republicans will go on with their lives happily no matter who wins the election, no matter who becomes president?
I’m not sure I’ve seen a bigger bunch of whining fucking crybabies in my lifetime. Get over it. Your side lost.
If you are going to gripe about a speech, be sure you correctly quote it and give context otherwise you become just another pundit who manipulates words to suit their agenda.
I don’t know, they seem to be in pretty good cheer and humor to me.

I thought you weren’t coming into the LR anymore? Training not going so good huh? : )

Truthfully, even as a libertarian I don’t find that portion of Obama’s statement objectionable in itself. Whether a government is good or bad is not determined by how large it is per se, but rather by how well it executes the proper functions of government. What is much more bothersome is the definition (which you omitted) that Obama provides for “works”: “whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified.” None of those things fit within the proper functions of a government. It is also disturbing that none of the proper functions of government (e. g., defense against threats from abroad) even make Obama’s list.
Agreed, a transparently dishonest attack…
What is much more bothersome is the definition (which you omitted) that Obama provides for “works”:
Good, point. I was bothered by it but precisely because of the definition I believe is held.
Sure if one believes the definition that “government works by doing as little as is necessary” then the statement would not bother me. However the current belief, again almost regardless of party, is the “Government works by doing as much as possible”. This of course means that a “Working” government inherently grows and grows.

It’s going well, actually–thanks for asking! I just tuned in to see the hate-fest, and wasn’t disappointed! Half of the threads seem to be about flags desecrated, commies taking over and white people being enslaved…yeeeshh…
This attitude is exactly what is wrong today. There are no sides … we are all on the same team. If we do not pull together we will be handing off a lower standard of living to the future.
Sick of the “red” and “blue” stuff. Suck it up and get on the same team whether you are republican or democrat.

More and more like Animal Farm/1984 each day.
And let’s be honest, it doesn’t matter a lot whether it’s Reps or Dems that are in power, both are moving towards true socialism…it’s just that libs seem to be a bit more open about their agenda and we are now going to see very rapid movement to that type of system.
Is your carbon footprint too big? We’ll just tax you more.
Don’t work? Don’t worry, govt will provide.
And +1 on the “we Americans are evil for enjoying such a high standard of living”. Wasn’t it less than 6 monts ago we witnessed the ecological carnage inflicted by China? God how fast we forget…
You guys who are still dreaming of a smaller government are hilarious. Wake up and smell the coffee!
When was the last time a company hired a new CEO to make the company smaller?
