Can they prove you are listening to music or just wearing shades that have earphones? I know listening to music on a personal device is not legal but are the earphones attached to the glasses going to get you pulled over.
Do you know of anyone who tried to use them? It would seem that the aero helmets would cover the ears enough… in fact it almost looks as if some people used them at Kona this year.
I’ll probably get banned for posting this. Apologies in advance.
People would want to listen to music because studies prove what we all experience with tunes. Athletes have better concentration, higher pain thresholds and increased endurance while listening to music. I think music is not legal for safety but if it were I would say that it would be a PED.
I like to have my senses if I’m out for a ride with 2,000 of my closest friends (you did say this was for an IM). I’d probably rather not get the higher pain threshold that you speak of on the bike because you’d end up paying for it on the run.
I’ll train with music sometimes (but definitely not anything like all the time) but racing, no way.
Blatantly not legal. So you either choose to do an IM and cheat, or you don’t. Nothing fuzzy about it. They don’t have to prove anything and race officials know exactly what Oakley Thumps are. Even if you didn’t get caught you still broke the rules. Same as a doping. Is it wrong if you don’t get caught doping?
Personally I kind of think it’s a stupid rule to not let people use earphones during an IM run. If everyone has access to the same rules you can’t argue that it imporves performance - it’s just like aerobars or aero wheels. Not everyone has them on their bike, but they have the option to put them on.
Honestly I can’t think of a good reason to not let people run with an iPod since people do it in major marathons and other races all the time.
We’re both going to be banned because I agree with you. I imagine it has to more to do with our lawsuit happy culture and less to do with actual safety.
Thought that I read in a previous post that those were actually a new model of Oakleys that will be available this spring and just look similar to the thumps
.
They were listed as illegal under the Chicago Marathon Rules. Seemed like every third person was wearing an ipod of some sort. It might just be a matter of not enforcing the rule, but making it “banned” for insurance purposes?
Do NOT use Thumps for IM, or any other physical sport. Nevermind the rules, ethics, etc, they will die. I had a pair crap out on me because of the sweat. Thumps + sweat=waste of $400. This came straight from their tech support.

That’s funny considering as all their advertising shows people wearing Thumps while training
