hello everyone.
i am currently shooting (photographing) a few projects here in hawaii for the full week (until saturday) and am interested if anyone would be up for riding or pointing me in the direction to find some great people to ride with this week. i’m finishing up this months training for ironman louisville. i’m currently staying on the northshore in Waialua Beach. Just got in yesterday and trying to adjust to the 6 hour time change.
i did research before i came on renting road bikes while i’m here, so in hopes this morning to look further into that. i do have my bike shoes…etc. so any advice on where to get/borrow a good bike to rent, preferably a TT bike or one with at least aerobars would be great!
anyways any help would be great and looking forward to getting alot of training in while i’m here in beautiful hawaii!
I was out there earlier this year for fun and was encouraged by my coach to bring my MT bike. The traffic is insane out there. This way you can go anywhere! I went to a local bike shop and they had tons of rides for me. The climbing was insane (if you have all day to do it over and over). This is overlooking Pearl Harbor. I will see you at IMKY
Or try Boca Hawaii, www.bocahawaii.com. They have decent rentals and next to IT&B, they’re about the best resource on the island for training.
A great loop from Waialua is up, up, up kam hwy, and then head back down kaukonahua. It’s about a 13 mile loop. There’s fairly decent traffic to contend with going up kam hwy, but there’s a huge bike lane, the kind you see on the Queen K on the big island. Going down Kaukonahua is tons of fun, long descent and managable corners. Otherwise just head out the north shore and back.
If you’re in town, hit up Tantalus drive. The IT&B guys usually ride it on Tuesday mornings, meeting at the shop. if you get a bike from Boca, see if they can rent you a trainer too and ask about the trainer workout at Magic Island on Thursday mornings.
Tuesday mornings at 6:45ish there’s also a Boca group who swim at Kaimana Beach right next to the natatorium.
Saturday is a 2.4mile open ocean swim on the north shore, Pipeline to Waimea bay, huge turnout with probably 300-400 people. Don’t miss it! http://www.hawaiiswim.com/
Here’s a link to a new bike shop in Waialua, http://www.sugarmillbikes.com/. I don’t know if he has any rentals, but sure would be conventient for you if he does.
I will for sure make the open water swim tomorrow at 645 and hope to get better connected! Would also love to make the ride you mentioned, any chance you know what time they meet?
I think around 2 I’ll head to boca and the other shop mentioned to see what they have. If anyone is interested in a long run this afternoon around 4 I’ll be doing a 10-12 miler near aweoweo beach. There’s a bike path near there I saw!!
If you head to Boca and IT&B at 2, you most likely won’t be back in time to be running on North Shore at 4. You could park across from IT&B and run in the Kapiolani/Diamondhead area.
i was in Laie last week, just ran down that main road everyday, loved it, ocean on one side, green mountains on the other, to do a century ride i guess you would need to do about 3 loops on that road
