Trek have just bought the biggest chain of bike stores in Western Australia. The largest Customer of giant in Australia. Their first job is to sell all the Giants off ! There are already 3 trek stores here, now there will be 9. I find that an incredible investment in a smaller market. There are independents that sell trek, will be interesting to chat to some of them.
In Austin, we just lost Bicycle Sport Shop to Trek.
The other local stores have seen a bump in business.
Trek also purchased “Trek Bicycle Superstore” which was a series of stores mostly in San Diego that was privately owned. That purchase went through at the same time Trek bought Nytro. We’ll see if the changes are just polo shirts and store looks or if the culture will change in the near future.
Completely missed this, but it is a bit sad that this store with lots of tri-history is gone. I remember visiting the store in ‘96, probably at its peak period in triathlon, and seeing all that history on the walls.
Also remembered that it was much less organized then i thought it would be. Bikes were dropped literally all over the place but it still felt like i was entering, coming from the netherlands, in a famous tri/bike shop.
Couldn’t resist to pick up one of the first profile design project x aerobars, i think one of the first ‘integrated’ aerobars ;-).
JeroenWishing the very best to Skip and hope the sale was good to him. Nytro is the most iconic triathlon retailer of them all - it’s the end of an era.
Same here. I would travel to business in SCAL all the time. My perfect day was visiting B&L and Nytro and than going to Pizza Port for lunch. Almost made me want to move there. Trek Stores suck.
Trek Stores suck.
I’m not so sure I’d go as far as “suck,” but a Trek store now the closest to me, and I’ve gone in several times for little parts, and I was really surprised at how little basic maintenance/repair stuff they have for retail display. Almost no tools.
I was last in for tubeless valve stems, and they don’t have those retail packaged. I got them by asking the service guys, but the model for that store is definitely not geared towards hobbyist maintainers like me.
At least it absolves me off all guilt from buying Park tools via Amazon instead of from the closest LBS.
Carbon X is a 1 pc & I got it around fall of 1999. 100% carbon. Solid but very heavy & few things to adjust on them. Tech has come a long way since!
These are mine, the original Project X aerobars, fully integrated (not the original armpads however) but with the super rare brakes that gave me lots of looks and ‘trouble’ at the bike check ins at that time LOL

agree…they don’t really suck but the fun of going into trek store vs Nytro is just not the same.
We were sorry to see it sell, but so happy to see so many people on Slowtwitch with beloved memories of Nytro in its older days. It truly was an amazing place to grow up in!
Craig is still working in the industry just now with a focus on storage accessories and maybe something else to be continued ![]()
We were able to bring ‘home’ some old memorabilia when Skip purchased the store…in fact Paula Newby-Fraser’s Easton is hanging up in our offices - really full circle in more ways than one now! Skip did a really great job keeping the essence of what Nytro stood for to so many athletes.
Craig isn’t here on Slowtwitch but will make sure he sees this thread and read’s everyone’s posts! Keep sharing the memories - we love to see them!
Trek have also bought out TBE bike shops here in Western Australia. From what I hear, Trek’s revenue is more than Scott, Giant, and another brand (cant remember who) put together… making a huge move to have monopoly in the Aus market anyway.
Probably why it took over two years to sell the store.
Went in there Summer of 2019 on one of our trips to San Diego that summer. Was pretty cool. We forgot our bike pump at home so picked one up there. My GF made me go down 101 to recon the road for our ride that weekend.
I have visited Nytro periodically over the years when I have been in SoCal and in the North San Diego area. I knew both Craig Turner and Skip reasonably well. I knew that Skip was selling via posts here on the forum.
I was last in the shop when I was working with client who was racing Oceanside 70.3 in the Spring of 2019. We needed a few items for the client who was racing which they had, and I booked a rental road bike for a ride the day after the race when I had some free time. I rode up PCH to Oceanside and back on the rental. Great ride!
Our nearest LBS where we live is a Trek Store. It’s about 1K from our house. I don’t buy a lot from them or need them for much, but I try and buy as many odds and ends as I need for DIY Home repairs and maintenance as I can from them and send folks there way that are looking for “a bike”. Least I can do!
was sad to see this last time i was there.
It was cold, sterile, corporate, overly minimalist. Not a bike shop.
Basically no merch in store-- sometimes i like to pick up a hat, a water bottle, a jersey, etc when I spend time in a cool city. What they did have was just the standard trek stuff… nothing that would differentiate the visit to that trek store in Austin from the one on the west side of madison near my house.
