This is great news; this race was always held in July and had been canceled or shortened the almost every year for the past 6 years. I think there were also rumors that this race was going to be canceled so it is nice to see the change!
I did it years ago when it first started. They have to shut down one side of the Henry Hudson Parkway, shut down one of the west side streets to get from the boat basin into the park, which probably closes 4-5 major streets running north/south through Manhattan. Road closure set up/break down, police. That’s got to cost a pretty penny in a city. I think the price is reasonable considering where it’s being hosted.
I understand it’s expensive to shut down in cities, but $370 seems crazy.
It is crazy expensive just like everything else in NYC is crazy expensive. That is just the reality of living/working/having fun in NYC.
so they go from too hot to too cold. early mornings in october can be frigid in nyc. there’s a reason why the tri calendar in the nyc metro area switches mostly from tri to bi in september . . .

Yes due to heat they reduced it from an oly to sprint this past year without giving anyone refunds or compensation. Not saying they should have just stating what happened.
Good on NYC Tri. Much better in October—Wimps about it being too cold in October are weak humans (just kidding–but most likely it will be 70 degrees and a bit humid and no one will freak about it being too cold!)
It’s NYC. It’s super expensive. It’s not that great of a place for a triathlon.
That said, price is understandable. EXPENSIVE. BUT DESIRABLE.
I did it once–I had a 19 minute swim because the Hudson was pumping. The rest was very challenging for my old body–NYC muggy. I went from 1st after the bike to something like 12th.
Loved everything about it.
Would never do it again. (see comment above–the two are not contradictory)
Bucket-list for sure!
I think this would be a very attractive race for any one in the NE–for sure as well as anyone that wanted to do a tri/vacation thing in NYC…I’m happy to offer advice to anyone in the later camp…I’m not a travel professional but my daughter is…lol…and I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night!
Only thing worse than NYC Tri stans are Chicago Tri stans who are too delusional to admit the bike course, while objectively cool on the eyes, is a pot hole riddled shit ride.
Really baffles me how this forum has been nonstop doom and gloom about how Ironman is the devil for being committed to profits over everything. However, then you have these clowns obsessed with these crap races in big cities.
Urban tri’s are overpriced and overrated. Don’t @ me cuz you’re wrong if you disagree.
Swim bike fly: don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big fan of the nyc tri but I am very glad to have done it. I swam in the Hudson, cruised up the highway and ran through Central Park. I wouldn’t do it again but feel like my triathlon career and cumulative experience does benefit from having done it! It is a fundamentally unique and different tri.
Not for everyone but was a real plus to have done for me!
A lot of complaining about the price, think we all should just be thankful that they found a spot on the calendar to keep the race alive. About the price of a 2 star room for one night in NY, and about half the $750 price tag of the Escape race in San Francisco. In the cases of these urban super expensive races, I think we let the market decide if it is too much, or too little. If they dont make money, race gone. If not enough interest at this price, race gone. Lets hope for option #3, plenty of interest and the RD makes enough money to justify the myriad of hassles that this race absolutely presents each year…
I did a version of this race back in 84, and it was a blast. Except for swimming through raw feces and old dead bodies, but had all the shots for the water back then, so all good!!!
