Me too, so is anyone else doing this race? Anyone doing the elite amateur wave? I am, even though i’m not gonna break 50 on the run. Think it’ll be wetsuit legal?
I think slowtwitcher bigd is racing, possibly in the pro wave with another slowtwitcher (Bjorn) and his Crooklyn posse’?
I’m not doing it, but if you’re in the elite start – take it. Last year they had m30-34 go last, which is usually OK, but there is such a high concentration of newbies & uniformed-on-the rules/etiquette participants that it made the race somewhat dangerous. I was happy just to finish uninjured.
As for the Phillies…I love their lineup. They just need some pitching. Ever check out this site? http://www.phillysucks.com/
According to the NYC Tri website the Hudson River was 72 degrees on July 10th and we have up to 78 degrees without any penalty and then can wear a wet suit from 78 to 84 degrees but can’t win any thing. The ten day forecast for race day July 22 is for partly cloudy skies with a temperature range of 72 to 85 with only a 10% chance of rain. So far I think this sounds good. Best of luck to every one. Tim
I’ll be there. First time at this race. Age grouper. I missed the elite amateur wave by one minute for a time to submit. Is the course really crowded? Can’t wait to swim in the Hudson. How many people can say they did that or bike on the west side highway? I’m not worried about the water quailty at all. Anything with a good current must be good. Keeps things flowing!
Stay to the right on the swim. The current is stonger and there is less crap buildup to contend with. (The slack water by the wall is shallower and more murky too.)
Make sure your water bottles/aero bottles are very secure- the joints on the West Side Highway are notorious bottle bouncers.
Finally (and really health & beauty related)…when you exit the swim, do a good job of wiping your face off. During the past few years the oil in the river has left some nasty Fu Manchu oil beards on the swimmers…groooooosss.
I’m doing it to!! Did it last year, thought it was great.
The swim start for me last year was a battle, the lane isnt big enough to hold the wave sizes, and I got caught in a bad pack and couldnt get out for a while (the swim is all i got). The bike and the run were also pretty crowded. They spread the start out over like 2 hours but there were still people everywhere, there was never a moment where I was alone (not that I mind). But the course is unbeatable, West Side Highway and a run through Central Park…seems like a good way to spend a Sunday morning.
