This is unreal and very sad, but not surprising. I grew up there and it seems the sentiment toward cycling hasnt changed in all these years. Riding in the jungle of NYC is sometimes safer than “suburban” LI.
Unreal response but you should correct your title as it is a Suffolk County Legislator not a NY State Legislator. State Legislators would not have replied
I really love his made up facts of 90% have gotten hit while riding.
I actually wrote a NYS Assemblyman (Jim Hayes) about the condition of one our local roads with a bike path on the shoulder. Not only did he reply but he also contacted local county and state DOT office to ensure the issues were re mediated (they were kinda fixed). Though he’s one of our more approachable Representatives, I was not expecting much and was pleasently suprised. I also contacted US Representative Razzenhofer and, as expected, was completely ignored seeing as I’m just a plebeian, not some rich donor
The Mayor of Watertown NY about a month ago said on the radio that people who bicycle in winter should be arrested. Further went on to say they were worse than texting drivers. (Remarks made when a caller he was responding to was complaining about the sidewalks not being shoved and people having to walk in the road). I surmise the Mayor’s comments were a deflection tactic. Whatever.

Who votes these people into office
I know he’s a county guy which is why I just said “NY.” I thought NY would have more appeal than “Suffolk County.” I never meant it to say that he was NY State.
And to answer your second question, I’m not sure, because I’m pretty sure most of the homeowners in the Hamptons don’t actually vote there
There are a lot of very nice people on Long Island riding bicycles, and we have a very good time at it. We try to keep our politics and our cycling separate, that is only good manners.
I can tell you that Long Island is a great place to ride a bike (especially here in Suffolk County), you should come here on a nice summer day and ride down Dune Road as fast as you can between the bridges pace lining with some friends. There are some rude and obnoxious drivers, but I’ve run into those people in other states as well. They are building more and better bike lanes in NY and the NYC citiBike program has been a hit. So it is not all gloom and doom here for cycling.
I do agree that there is a general need for both motorists and cyclists to have more tolerance and consideration for each other across the country.
Yep, I live on Long Island as well, and the whole thing confuses me.
You drive drunk and kill someone and it is murder (DA Rice)
You dive impared by drugs and kill someone and … I’m not even sure what they convicted the guy of.
As for the woman that got munched by the car turning left, nothing would have saved her (bike lane, sidewalk, etc) except her awarness of the situation, which either she didn’t have or it failed her. Anyone that rides in Suffolk or Nassau county has to understand what the risks are and take whatever percautions you can.
