Nuun. (1)

I tried NUUN thanks to Clancy in HB on my bike ride saturday and I think that is going to be my new Electrolyte drink. i think it is much better than the Motor tabs and taste better too. oh yeah and cheaper. Anybody else have any other suggestions for an electrolyte. i really like the fact that i can just drop a tablet in the water bottle and not have to worry about carrying a gel like e-caps electrolytes or powders. this way if i can just refill the bottle with water at any stop and drop in a NUUN tablet. definately kept me going in the heat this weekend.

I’m not impressed with NUUN because if I remember right it really doesn’t have nearly enough electrolytes as compared to sports drinks and especially Thermolytes or Salt Stick caps. I have several tubes of NUUN gathering dust in my closet.

well that wasn’t going to be my only source of electrolytes but just something i can add into the water to get a few more electrolytes so that i don’t have to pop the Endurolytes like candy. But i just looked up the Thermolytes and they seem to be better than the Endurolytes so maybe i will have to give them a try next time and it seems that they are cheaper too. my friend had that salt stick, that maybe something better than what i currently do, trying to get all those Endurolytes out of a bento box and then popping them like candy. it seems like it would be much easier to just take in a few of those Thermolyts from a Saltstik on my aero bars.

I use a product called ZYM, I like it better than NUUN & from what I can tell it has higher percentages of what you need across the board. I.E. Zym 250 mg of sodium vs. NUUN 180mg. But who knows, works for me!

Those would be serving sizes for NUUN, which is a 1/2 tablet in 8 oz of water. I use one tablet in a water bottle for 360 mg of sodium.

At my last half IM NUUN saved mr. I couldn’t keep the Infinit down due to the inconsistent mixing strengths. NUUN calmed down my stomach enough to finish, not strong but better than the DNF I was headed for. I did the entire HIM on one gel befor ehte swim 2 NUUNS and water.

NUUN is a good product, as with anything though everyone has to make sure it works for them. It probably won’t be the only source of electrolytes at the longer distances but it’s a nice addition.

Thumbs up from me on this.

I really like the NUUNs, but I use them in short workouts…I don’t really like plain water, so I throw a NUUN in my water bottles and take them to swim practice and use them on short workouts…great for supplement electrolytes. Not sure I could race on them, since I really want calories…
What don’t you like about the Motortabs? I really enjoy the Orange ones and switched over from the good ol days of Extran (!) to Motortabs and LOVE THEM. Done all race distances on the Motortabs - (except IM) - 2 tabs per large water bottles.
Good luck!

Endurolytes (although I like Hammer products) are pretty middle of the pack. Themolytes better and Salt Stick caps are probably the best. I have nothing against NUUN - I actually like the taste.

i just don’t like the motor tab taste and it appears that the nuun has more sodium. But it is much easier for me to drink nuun than motor tabs. But like i said this is just something I put in my water for workouts and also in my water to get extra sodium so that I don’t drink pure water. I am not looking for calories or carbs as I will take gels or perpeteum or something else for carbs/calories.
But i just tried it for the first time on saturday and it seemed to work well for me.

I haven’t tried ZYM or Motor Tabs, but then when I find something that I like and that works for me why change. I like getting my carbs from other sources, and like NUUN for rehydration. I’ve used it both for triathlon, and climbing mountains.

I have used them in Asia (Phuket, Bintan, Singapore for training) and found them to be good. Rode some of the Pyrennees last month and I just automatically added the tablets to my bidons. No issues and no cramping since I started using them. Not so many eyebrows raised as when you pop a salt tablet!

Agree. I’m a big fan of NUUN over the Motortabs. I used to use MotorTabs but after a few hard rides having trouble getting it into the system I wanted to try something new. I think it was the sugar that is in the MotorTabs that made it hard for me to process. The NUUNs have made a huge difference.

I highly recommend trying out the saltstick. I have two of them in my aerobars and went through one whole stick and started into the other during Vineman. (I take a lot of Thermolytes b/c of cramping issues)

Try out different serving sizes of the NUUN as well. A lot of people stick with the one tablet but I know a few that use 1.5 per bottle and I use 2 per bottle with my CarboPro. It helps me get some extra electrolytes and I like the taste a little better with 2 as well.

yeah, I will. Like I said I just tried them out on Saturday and really liked them. and as someone else mentioned I think it was easier on the Stomach than the Motortabs and taste better. I will start experimenting with more than one tab per bottle. But for right now I am just using them for training. I will probably use them in my next race, Jordanelle Tri.

thanks.

I’m a big fan of NUUN, and have been since I tried my first tab. I think that the general consensus is right, long course races are going to need something IN ADDITION to NUUN to get all the electrolytes you’ll need, but it will always be in one of my bottles…coupled with some Carbo-Pro it works well for me.

hey thristy peeps, I work for nuun and just wanted to clarify a couple of things for you. as far as the levels of electrolytes in nuun, it’s been tried and tested to help you keep up with your needs for a long day. for the past couple years, we’ve been on the podium for the last 3 years in hawaii (including desiree) and is used by some of the best triathletes, adventure racers and ultra-runners in the world; if anyone knows how to dial in their nutrition and hydration routine it’s these guys.

someone mentioned the sodium content looked a bit low. a nuun “serving size” is a 1/2 tablet and based on 8oz. of water, which contains 180mg of sodium. for your reference here’s where a few of the other drinks compare: acclerade (120mg), powerbar (170mg), gatorade (110mg), gatorade endurance (200mg), g2o (120mg), cytomax ready-to-drink (55mg).according to the acsm, the recommended range of electrolyte replacement is 500-700mg per litre, nuun falls at the upper end of the range with 720mg per litre.

what’s cool about nuun is that by adding both electrolytes and flavour to your drink you stimulate your natural thirst mechanisms- the net result you drink more! (according to research- up to 90% more than plain water). instead of popping salt pills all day where you stress about getting the right ratio of electrolytes to water- with nuun, just drink- and focus on the more important things in your race & smiling when you cross the finish line.

fyi- I discovered nuun at while working at speedy reedy triathlon a few years ago. I used to select the nutrition products carried in the store so I tried EVERYTHING. I fell in love with nuun because it’s so easy to use, I can eat what I want on long rides, and after hour-10 on ironman day, I still like the taste.
