I had 16 inches of colon removed this week because of a malignant tumor. I should get back to “fine” easily enough when the incision heals. Hoping for a bit better than fine though…
Anybody have experience training after such? I’m wondering if the missing colon will affect my ability to process fluids or nutrition.
Water absorption might be a problem not nutrition.
My wife had 18 inches removed 12 yes ago
She says " eat right whole grains no charcoal cooked foods"
“lots vegetables fruit limit red meat”
Yes she is a food Nazi
Good luck Thom
What side of your colon was removed? There is a functional difference.
If you had a right hemi-colectomy, it may take some time for your fluid adsorption to adjust. That is having frequent BM’s is very common. Take time to heal your incision if the surgery was performed “open” Movement and pressure are the enemies of proper wound healing. Wounds only have one chance to heal well. Laparoscpic incisions will heal quickly.
It was the “bottom” part, so I think that makes it the right side for the doctor, left side for me. I’m sorry, I don’t know the protocol on that. Is that the frequent poo side?
The procedure started out as laparoscopic, but then they went to an open. It’s a good 8 inches of scar plus two laproscope incisions.
Your left is the surgeon’s left. The right colon is more involved with electrolyte absorption. You’re colon will adapt, but initially you will have an increased in stool transit time. Also, don’t push to hard early on, there is no rush. Bring your body back to health, and let those incisions heal. Skin will give the appearance of being well healed, but the action is underneath. Not sure what your’re time table is, but at least 4 mos. for a laparotomy incision prior to strenuous workout. You DO NOT want to risk an incisional hernia. Good luck, sound like you are in good hands.
