Ridiculous question here, but is anyone adding salt to food in attempt to up there sodium levels?
If so, When? Pre/Post workouts?
yup I am. Usually its pre workout (I can only train in the afternoon/night) so at lunch I will add salt to my chicken, or pasta or whatever I am eating. Post workout, depending on what it is I might add a little, but usually my powder drink mix has sodium in it and that works enough.
I changed this in January and have noticed a difference in my long running 10miles+
Not ridiculous at all. I don’t salt my food more but chose saltier foods like v8 but this is usually only before long races or hard workouts if its hot.
I have actually heard that it could be good to cut back on sodium during training, so that your body is able to adapt to less sodium. Then, come race day, sodium will have a stronger effect when consumed. Similar to caffeine.
Makes sense to me at least.
loading on salt pre race can be advantageous for two reasons. 1) you load up on electrolytes that keep you going after hours of sweating. and 2) salt helps your body retain water, so you can go into a race with some extra water if you drink enough as you load up on salt. i like to carbo-load with ramen noodles (about 50% DV Na/package) and drink 4-5L of water a day leading up to a race. it’s cheap, delicious and has worked well for me in the past.
