Nutrition during shorter training sessions

I have heard/read two schools of thought on nutrition/fueling during training sessions that are less than two hours in duration. One says to always train your body to take in and process fuel. The other is that by sticking with water only, you are training your body to run more economically.

I have tried both methods and can’t decide which is better. My “A” race is half IM. What are your experiences/thoughts on this?

I only use water for any workout of an hour or less. Workouts between 1-2 hours I make choice depending on air temperature and intensity. For me I am concerned with body compostion. I have a very slow metabolism so I keep calorie intact to a minimum. However on Long workouts I do use energy drinks, bars, etc.
