November Swim Challenge: 19th year of November Swim Challenges

The first swim challenge was in 2005 or 2006 (I was a college freshman) and Dev had, IDK, some run November run challenge so I figured fishes needed a club.
Post 'em!

PT done this morning.
I found out this AM my surgery was more involved than I understood. No one purposefully misled me, it just happened via “here’s what we think before surgery” vs what I was told (while drugged) post surgery (which I don’t remember at all and my mom didn’t understand enough to communicate). So IDK if I will be back to any sidestroke or anything this month or not but I’ll get back eventually.
In the meantime you can hear how I do PT every day… which is done for today!

I kind of feel like the “more complicated” is a win (in a weird way). It makes the increased pain make sense.

Hope you are close to the corner and things even out. My husband hated/couldn’t tolerate all the side-effects of the good pain meds, so he’d muscle through on the OTC stuff. Not sure which is worse…

the “more complicated” knowledge was HUGELY helpful in my mental state. You are correct: the increased pain, in the absence of that knowledge, was like “what is wrong? did something come un-done that they fixed?” so knowing it was more complicated was a humongous relief from a stress and anxiety point of view- and that matters. A lot.

I had bad reactions to two different heavy-duty pain meds but have one that I do tolerate fairly well. I’m grateful to have that one because sometimes the OTC stuff doesn’t cut it. I’m sorry OTC meds were the only available thing for him side-effect wise :frowning:

As they say, knowledge is power, so take that forward, make a plan, then then power through this phase of your athletic life!!

Guess I will be first this month, hopefully some of you all will join me. I’m finding out doing these USRPT workouts that the next day really fells awful. Perhaps I just need to do more of them and harden up, or it is just going to be a thing to have to recover more. Today pool was 85 and felt crap, so did an actual recovery distance day:

1000buoy@15;00(14;42)
1000p@13;30(13;12)
500frog@10;00(9;22)
500p@7;00(6;36)
500frog@10;00(9;17)
5x100p@1;30(1;17+/17/16+/16/15)50 kick
4050SCY in 64 minutes

I figured out another shoulder exercise I can do this morning, so that was nice. One shoulder exercise (as did the others yesterday) and hip PT.

Come on folks, you all are going to get tired of my splashes and Tigers rehab routines. Lets see em!!!

So I have a sort of tell when I get in and do my first couple 100’s, it they are under 1;25 it is going to be a good workout, above and hit or miss. Today was over 1;30’s, so slogged through another distance sort of day to just get in the yardages, and hope for a better start next time:

20x200’s as
4x(3x200buoy or pull@3;10/3;00)200back@3;40/200frog@4;00)buoys(3;03/2;59/56/53/51/49)pulls(2;38/37/36/39/37/35)backs(3;12/3;09/3;07/4x50’s@1;00-45/44+/44/43)frogs(3;49/46/42/43) 100SD
4100SCY in 70 minutes

Pool hot again, 85 or so, imagine that is the new normal for the winter

I’m tired of my rehab routine but I’m grateful to be able to do something, even “lay in bed isometrics”
speaking of which, done for the day there

Ok then, its my swims and your rehabbing going back to back this month, at least you have a lot more room for improvement than me!!!

Did my usual warm up and the early time said I was in for a good day, so did another USRPT type of swim today:

3x100buoy@1;40(1;25/23/22)3x100frog@2;00(1;54/52/49)3x100p@1;30(1;18/17/15)100IM kick(1;43)
3x(5x50buoy@1;00hard/50frog@1;10/50fly hard@1;20)buoys(33+ on first, then all in the 32’s for the other 14)frogs(54/53’s)flys(36/35+/35+)
2x(2x100p@1;40/1;50/50stroke hard @1;30)pulls(1;17/14/15/12)back(42/41)
2x(2x100frog@2;00/2;30/50brst hard@1;30)frogs(1;52/52/50/50)breast(42/41)
4x50p@1;00/50swim hard–pulls(39/38/36/36)swim(33)
4x50 dolphin@1;30(68/62/61/59)50SD

3500 SCY Worked out some pre election anxiety

1000 FR 14:41/200 IM kick
5x200P on 3:00 (2:35-2:39)/200IM kick
10x 50 stroke on 60 (38-48)/200 IM kick
8x25 FR in 30 (18s)

TC best wishes in the rehab. Long journey, but you seem very determined.

Looks like the other fish may be having trouble finding the thread in the new format.

5x200 2:58 then 3:08s for the rest, 5x100IM 1:50s high 5x50 untimed.
sluggish, HR only got to 150s so must be still tired from yardwork etc this weekend.

Back down under, making sure my pet kangaroos are still alive

Some brief thoughts on swimming in the US v Aus. Pools shorter, pools are either much cheaper to get into or much more expensive, hours are shorter, seemingly more people in AUS swim for their exercise (I didn’t get that impression in the states, more that people just get in for a swim to cool off or stretch or do 10-15 minutes after the weights / gym), pools can be a bit hot in the states. I doubt many are like us here in the states, where they just lap swim solo. Seems like lots join the masters teams, as they have the best access to pool hours and lanes. Am I way off here?

Just swam for about an hour mixing things up and just getting the feel again, man it feels good to swim

Hope you had a blast on your trip, give us some of your observations(besides the hot pools!!) of the Great American landscapes and people…And of course the pool and swimmer situation is contingent on where you are. If you are in Florida, Texas, or California, you would find it a lot like where you live I bet, with a ton of outdoor pools…

I got in today with a bit of soreness from yesterday, but continued on with some more USRPT stuff to really smash myself:

3x100buoy@1;40(1;27/25/23)3x100frog@2;00(1;56/53/51)3x100p@1;30(1;18/16/14)100IM kick(1;54)
2x200IM@4;00(3;08/3;05)
4x(200frog@4;30/broken 200@50’s@1;00/1;10/1;20/1;30–first 3 IM’s, last set pull)frogs(3;44/46/46/51)IM’s(2;43±-38+/44/45/36/–2;35-- 36/42/43/34/–2;28+35/39+/42/32)pulls(33+/30+/30/30)
6x50@1;00 odds frog/evens buoy–Frogs(56/54’s)buoys(43/42/40)

Hey Monty!
I would need a PHD to understand your last workout.
I would need a turbo charged hydrofoil to keep up.

Yikes

The landscapes outside of the city areas were quite impressive. Most of your areas are very different state to state was my impression and I was not expecitng that - I had not thought of that being the case before hand.

Probably the best arial view was the last part of flying from Tuscon to San Fran (from the sky). I don’t know what that rolling desert area is called but it was real nice.

I had a few chats here and there with people but not all that much. I had a chat with a fella at a pool in AZ who was a nice guy, kind of a surfy fella who was just getting some laps in. I liked hearing people talk about how much you states guys love sport, and I didn’t fully understand that until you get a pro game (of one of the 3 major sports) basically every night of the week. And if they stuff up the broadcast and you only get one ball game on Sundays instead of two, there is backlash

Only did such a small part of the country and its so vast, would have been nice to stay longer but the dollar sucks right now for us so I need to get back into work.

Highlights from nature - grand canyon, painted desert, fields in west texas and the adobe houses in NM

Made me chuckle as there was some nice rivalries between TX and CA - no other state seemed to care about the other state, in the day to day type conversations. But TX and CA always had a jibe at the other

monty have you been to aus?

just want to say ive still been doing that tennis ball and squash ball, pushed up agst the wall and on the ground, getting into those spots and nearly making eyes water each day. makes a massive difference. I can actually throw a ball again pain and crunch free

HEY!!

Been swimming 2-3times per week. The 3rd really makes a difference. Only managed two swims the past couple weeks w life taking over. Headed to the pool shortly here for our anaerobic thursday sessions. Last week was 3 x 50 max. 1 x 100 max and then 3 x 50 max again. I went 55 high from a push on that 100!! was feeling good. d

thanks! PT done today and yesterday
Follow up X-rays look great for hip! Had appt yesterday.
Unfortunately I may be in for a fair amount of pain for quite a bit longer due to the procedures they did. They did the labral repair, a CAM osteoplasty, AND Lesser trochanter osteoplasty. Surgeon thinks the “corner,” just from all that stuff, may be further than the three to six weeks. We looked at pictures from in the middle of surgery of what the bone they shaved looks like, and I can see all the blood vessels and all the exposed nerves and so it makes a lot more sense to me now when people talk about inflammation and just all the pain where it’s coming from. And that’s calming mentally at least.

55 is moving. Hope u have a good trip.

They keep iceberg open except Thursday when they clean it, so hope you get a swim there. Can’t go wrong with a few laps of bondi beach either, many do that
